Ok, so I know this is not that ambitious of a goal, but I have my first 2k test ever tomorrow, and I would love to break 8 minutes. My 1k was a 3:52 so I know that I CAN do it. I just need to get that little voice in my head to shut up.
How to erg a 2k in under 8 minutes
How I did it: 7:50.0 on my first 2k, or a 1:57.5 avg split. The first 1k was pretty easy, the 3rd 500 got a bit harder, and at about 400 meters to go, I hit a wall. Fortunately, by that point, the end was close enough in sight and I was able to push through it, and my split didn't drop below 2:00. My 2nd 2k, 20 minutes later was a 2:00.5 split, or an 8:02
Next goal, by the indoor racing championships on feb. 2nd, 1:54 split, which would be a 7:36. I don't currently know how reasonable that is, or if it will be too easy.
Lessons & tips: PACE YOURSELF. You want to keep a pretty consistent split for the entire 8 minutes. Maintain your goal split for the first 1500, then for the last 500 give it everything you've got left in the tank.
Don't do it alone. Its a lot easier if you're next to other people, and you have other people yelling at you, and watching your splits.
And don't give up. Yes it hurts. Don't think about that. Focus on your split and your rate and your distance and not on the splitting pain in your thighs.
