see a bald eagle flying

ive seen them at places where i was told i would see them and ive seen them by “chance” in nature, and i must say its much cooler to chance upon them, just saw one yesterday fly over me down at the lake, so one last year pick a fish out of the water, now that was cool! too bad the woods where they live is gonna get cut down…

What a beautiful site! I was looking out into the back yard and I saw a bald eagle flying across the yard, then land at the top of a dead tree about 100 yards up the hill toward my neighbors. I’ve seen bald eagles before and actually helped a guy from a bird rescue organization capture a wounded bald eagle, but this is the first time I’ve seen one fly by my house.

I went on the eagle-spotting cruise with the 5th grade (son Nate). We had a perfect, sunny, frigid day for it—so bright I had to shield my lens, so cold I had to suck my fingers to work the shutter.

But oh…what a day.

Eight bald eagles sitting in a single snag, watching…

One flew right over the Mish-an-Nock (our boat)...

And not 75 feet from the starboard side, an eagle took a kokanee from the lake in a splash of spray. Almost immediately, another bald flew down and knocked the fish from the first bird’s talons, then circled back and snagged it from the water.

Incredible.

May some of my shots turn out. It seemed like every time I got the Pentax stabilized, bird in the lens and not in the sun, someone bumped me or stepped in front of me.

There are several bald eagle pairs that nest on Falls Lake and Jordan Lake. When I was working for IBM, I would see a couple of them flying through the gaps in the trees on my commute. The state rangers at Falls Lake or Jordan Lakes should be able to let you know where they are nesting and best times for viewing

My sister lives on the Inside Passage, in Sitka, Alaska. I went up there for her wedding in March – we saw so many eagles my three year old son came back with a new mantra: “Eagle!” You’d have to be a hermit there to not see an eagle every day. One of my brothers also saw a Golden Eagle – got a really nice photo.
