I read your post about mixed feelings about leaving California and you are absolutely right about EVERYTHING you said. I live in San Diego County and was born and raised here and while yes, it is PERFECT here…it makes you re-think about the definition of “Perfect”. My husband and my family just cannot afford it anymore. We built an amazing home here and invested in a lot of real estate when we sold our company. “Set for life” you might think… not quite. We have completely depleated our savings while trying to survive for the last 2 years and now that we are desperate, we cannot get anyone to buy any of our many real estate holdings. All of the prices for everything have gone up so much that we are drowning! We cannot even afford to live in our home of ten years due to the INCREDIBLE PRICE OF ELECTRICITY AND WATER, not to mention ALL of the other expenses. We pay over $700 per month for electricity (And that is living with the lights off most of the time and NEVER running the air conditioning)We landscaped our yard beautifully years ago to add value to our home, now it is coming back to haunt us with ENORMOUS water bills ($900/mo) because of increases in rates by our water district. Even with Drip irrigation and a careful watering schedule..the bill is killing us! Its a total catch 22. I can’t even SELL my house right now because property values have dropped so much that I wouldnt get enough to pay it off.
Moving out of state is looking better and better every day. California is so screwed up now and who can even make the amount of money it takes to survive here anymore? Is it even worth it if you did make enough? I think all the time about how other people in other states are living wonderful lives for a lot less! I do not think I could ever move to ARIZONA though…TOO DAMNED HOT! It is just crazy to live in that kind of heat every day.
We are really seriously looking at the Austin, Texas area. I have heard that it has been called “the San diego of Texas”. In fact, we are going there to check it out and see if we could see ourselves living there. It is so hard to REALLY imagine myself actually living somewhere else, but i also cannot imagine continuing to pay the price it costs to live here. If I stay, I will most likely end up loosing everything anyway.
