How to try a food that is not appetizing to you
How I did it: I hate sushi, but my husband loves it. I felt like I was missing out on a cool experience I could share with my guy. He always has such fun trying out new sushi creations whenever we go to a Japanese restaurant - and I have to admit, sushi is pretty to look at.
I also figured, hey, how disgusting could it be? Lots of people like it. An entire country practically lives on it. And if I eat it enough, maybe I will grow to like it.
For 3 long months, I ate sushi at every opportunity. I tried as many variations as I could (drawing a line at certain raw substances like quail egg, etc.) The only kinds I liked were the deep-fried/tempura rolls - probably because the greasy goodness covered up the pong of fish and vinegar -- but one can only eat so much grease. After 3 months, I was still basically gagging on the stuff.
Eventually, I had to come clean to my husband: I hate sushi and always will. But nobody can accuse me of not trying to like it. Three months! I still can't believe it sometimes...
Lessons & tips:
- If it's a new food, try it. You can't know that you won't like something until you try it.
- Eating an unappetizing food over and over again may not make it palatable.
- If you're determined to train yourself to like a new food, try preparing it in a way that is appetizing to you. (If all sushi was deep fried, I could have eaten it by the bucketful!)
