no bells and whistles cuz i didn’t really have the time. i just tied strips of tulle to a ribbon and a tutu it is. it’s cute and will be really fun to wear tonight! yay!
How to make a tutu
How I did it: I looked at tutorials on the internet, and browsed photos on Flickr for inspiration. Some people make tutus like gathered skirts, but I opted for cutting the fabric into strips and knotting it onto a length of elastic. I used 4 metres of light grey and 1/2 metre of dark grey organza, but I could easily have used them in equal measure.
Lessons & tips:
- More opaque colours look better.
- If you're working with strips, two or more colours look really nice.
- There are many different types of tulle, netting, organza, etc. Look carefully at photos and the fabric you're buying to determine how stiff you want your tutu to be. Also, some fabrics will be very scratchy.
- Think about what length you want your tutu to be. The length of your strips will be twice the length of your tutu, and if your fabric isn't wide enough, you'll need to cut it lengthwise.
- Messy is ok!

special party next weekend and i need something fabulous and funky.
i actually don’t have a lot of time, so i think i’m going to go the knot route instead of sewing. and ribbons. i feel that ribbons must be involved somehow.
see you soon, fabric row.

Super easy and cheap and fun. It made me feel like a kid again, running around in something so silly.
OK, not really, but this is what my sewing (/dining room) table looks like tonight. Should be ready in time for Minneapolis’ annual springtime burst of joyful community energy, the Mayday Parade. And maybe even the sexy party I’m going to next weekend.
It’s not exactly the tutu I pictured myself making, this is more of a traditional ballet tutu. But it’s a nice start, and it will look great over the sequin hotpants.
Not exactly a traditional tutu.
And what will I do with it when I’m done? Maybe wear it to Burning Man?
I think I need to create the wardrobe first, and then create a life that fits my wardrobe!
