I thought it was overly long, and they could have done something really interesting with the Venom storyline but didn’t. Ah well.
I was expecting great and my high expectations led me to be disappointed by the movie. Still an entertaining movie with jaw-dropping effects and plenty of humor mixed in, but failed to match the excellence of the first two.

Before I get into the film itself, let me comment that it is worth watching but the midnight show wasn’t. I had really hoped that I could have watched it earlier but the film didn’t arrive in time to be put together in advance. There was also a slew of kids because there was no school today, and kids today don’t know how to be respectful in movie theatres. A theatre is not a place to have conversations, chat on your cell phone, flash your cell phone screen around, etc.
Anyway, the film was as good as I expected it would be. It built upon the prior two films and provided a nice cap to the trilogy. All the characters evolved, and the new additions were handled appropriately.
As a comic collector, I didn’t really mind the changes from the comics (Sandman as the killer of Uncle Ben, Gwen Stacy’s late introduction since she should have died in the first movie). I also didn’t mind that we never saw Dr. Connors become the Lizard, though that’s still out there if they develop a fourth film.
Technologically, while CGI has improved since the last film, I can still tell the transition from live to CGI. While it’s a lot better than the old 80’s tv show, it’s still enough to pull me out of the fantasy.
Four out of the five leads give layered performances that overcome the material. The exception is Topher Grace who as Eddie Brock/Venom does not show any depth of character. Then again maybe psychosis is enough. Surprisingly Thomas Haden Church gave the best performance of the film as he conveyed the tortured soul of Flint Marko.
I’ll watch it again in a couple weeks.
Watched it already. It was okay. Not a big fan of how the movie was made, but I totally dig the themes used the messages it tried to impart.
Watching it tonight… but will try to watch it again at the Mall of Asia so that it’s IMAX.
Friday night was sold out for IMAX, but I got a block of 6 tickets for the late show on Saturday night. I’m very excited. This ovie looks fantastic.
