I am winning (or maybe ants are not active at night). I’ll check again tomorrow after work.
I’m putting food in jars, and vacuuming up crumbs and trails of ants (I have a bagless vacuum – hope I am not just creating an airborne brigade of ants as they come shooting out the far end). Ick ick ick.
By itself it doesn’t seem to be very effective on ants. But it seems to work very well on roaches, so that’s a good start. But then the ants seem to be taking a vacation lately, so I can’t complain.
A few days ago at the local pet food store I bought a food dish designed to trick bugs into not being able to climb into the dish and get at the food.
The bowl’s special features are the four small legs underneath the bowl, elevating it so the bottom portion of the bowl wall is lifted off the floor.
It works good so far. I should invest in a second and third dish, for a water dish and one more food dish.
I noticed the ants are back, looking for food. So I sprayed the entire trail which went outside the house and down the wall.
That should keep them away long enough while I try that syrup and boric acid mixture to get rid of them once and for all.
Either that, or these bait traps are past an expiration date.
I never did do the bowl of wine thing yet (I should), but the tried and tested ant and roach spray works like a charm. It’s just a matter of trying to spray the entire trail from start to end.
I have a cat, and he is extremely picky. Prefers specific brands of dry and canned food.
Unfortunately, there’s some really small ants who are not at all particular about what is served in my cat’s food dish.
The ants ignore the dry food, but it seems they go crazy over the canned food. I serve my cat’s food in the morning before I leave for work, and when I get home, the ants are starting to check it out.
So it’s going to be a delicate balancing act to try and get the ants away and keeping my cat safe and protected (he’s very snoopy, explores everywhere).
Maybe the “bowl of wine” trick would work, and I’d love to go to a store and say “A bottle of your finest Zinfandel please, I have a(u)nts staying at my house”.
But to find a place where my cat can’t reach it.
