I have volunteered for the special olympics for many years now. The best way to start is go to your local school and ask if they participate in it. If so start communicating with the teacher and ask if you can help train the students, then meet them all down there for state. If you wish to do more like be able to take time then I would say talk to the teacher and see who she goes thru and go that way. hope that helps some.
Bowling is coming up like this month.

I just started volunteering for a Special Olympics bowling team and after just one practice- this might be the funnest thing I’ve ever done!

People with special needs are very special. They do not let whatever handicap they might have get in their way. Instead of giving up, they seem to be more willing than other people without the handicap. I would love to help in the Special Olympics because they are uplifting and give encouragment to me for an ordinary day. They don’t see life challenging and they make life seem simple with no frustrations. This would be the best thing in the world for me to do, be by the side of someone in special olympics and see how he/she will put their all into it.

I work with developmentally disabled adults. I’ve been around them my whole life. I can’t think of much that is more rewarding then the smile on an athlete’s face when they compete in their events.

It’s absolutely one of the “must do”s! If the participants of the Special Olympics don’t touch your heart and your soul then you most definitely are NOT of this world.
The smiles they bestow on you are worth so much more than money could ever get you.
Try it. You’ll love it!

In my opinion, it is one of the most rewarding volunteer experiences. I enthusiastically encourage others to volunteer their time to this organization. The success of the athletic events depends on volunteers. After the first athlete you make smile, you’ll be hooked.

The 1991 International Special Olympics were in Minneapolis. I was a volunteer at table tennis. The fellow that volunteered to run the tournement was a local table tennis organiser. The people that acted as the table referees and with the matches were all local table tennis players. We also had quite a few people involved who were executives in the US table tennis association. We had about 200 athletes from 26 different countries. There were even coaching clinics and exibition matches. After that, the people that volunteered helped get started a good Minnesota team.
