How I did it: I had my father teach me about a year ago, and we only went out a couple times over the weekend. I did better than I'd prepared myself for, so I felt pretty good about myself; but after the the third time I went out we stopped going. Two months ago my sister fell ill and I had to look after my family while my parents stayed in the hospital with her. Because of this they took the car that I usually drive, the only other car was the dodge n… Read how I did it…
How I did it: My mom took me to a big parking lot for about 20 minutes...and then I was off! I took a 4 1/2 hour road trip 2 days later. If I can do it, anyone can! Read how I did it…
How I did it: I spent a lot of hours in the car with my dad driving in circles around a local highschool parkingĀ lot. Once I had that mastered (almost) I advanced to driving on back roads near my house. From there the next step was highways, merging, and stoplights. Despite breaking down in tears when my car stalled out at a light and rolling backwards away from a lot of hilly stops I did finally learn to be comfortable with my manual transmission. How I did it: I live in the Netherlands and if you want to get your driver's license here, you need to learn. And it takes a lot of lessons. So far, it's taken me 40 lessons, about 45 hours. 8 months. Next week, I can finally do my driver's exam. I hope I'll pass.Virtually all cars here are stick shifts, so most people learn to drive one automatically. It's not hard. Read how I did it…
How I did it: Went to an industrial park, where we knew there wouldn't be much traffic. Ten minutes of instructions and I was able to drive home myself. It really was just that easy. Read how I did it…

Cats&Scales Insomnia?? What is this new devilry?!
...especially since my boyfriend drives (and loves) a stick shift. =P It’d be nice to be able to drive his car around (even more so considering it’ll be our car someday… =D). He wants to teach me, I’ve just been reluctant because I don’t exactly want to spend my free afternoons learning to drive all over again. =P But, it’s gotta happen sooner rather than later.
Robadjuster is Yeah,
Driving a stick shift is not nearly as hard as it sounds. Learning how to drive a stick will open up a whole new world of vehicles that you can drive, and jobs that you can do!!
I highly recommend it!!!

There have been a few times I’ve tried to drive a stick, none of them have turned out to well.
Last night, my boyfriend took me to a parking lot and let me drive his car. I circled for about a half hour. Once I’m actually going, chaging gears is a breeze…just the starting and stopping without stalling, that’s the problem.

I took the car out today. I didn’t stall once while driving around the neighborhood. HOWEVER, I couldn’t park the car in the garage cause I kept stalling on the driveway. But whatever, I’m just happy I didn’t stall on the road. Still need to practice but getting a lot better.
TRod888 is going to be a MOM!
Well, after all this time of complaining that I have no opportunity to learn I am silenced. I felt I would never have the opportunity to learn since everyone that owns a manual does not want the wear and tear on their clutch. Understandable, but how is a person supposed to learn? I guess by buying their own manual transmission like I did. My car finally broke down again (for it’s last time). I’ve been long over due for a new car so off to the dealership we went just to look. Majority of the cars on the lot were manuals. This would not have been an issue except I actually like 2 of the cars enough to ask my husband to test drive them. When he and the dealer both looked at me and said “But you cannot drive a manual…” my only reply was “and what better way to learn?” My husbands car is a standard also, so there is no giving up on this one. I went out to day to a parking lot for about 20 minutes just working on 1st gear. Shifting is not an issue…stalling is. I hope this takes less than a month. It’s nerve racking to own a car and having to sit in the passenger seat while someone else drives you around all the time!

I’ve been out twice in the last two days with my dad to practice. I’m getting a lot better. I’m still not confident enough to be on actual busy roads, but at least I know if I HAD to drive a standard in a emergency I could.
