I am making great progress in gardening this year. Started seeds in flats early enough in the season. Will grow more vegetables than ever this year!

How to have an organic garden"Just tasting fresh clean chemical-free, 100% natural vegetables and strawberries makes the months of pulling weeds and compost well worth it."
How I did it: Technically it was a family effort, and effort is the biggest factor that an all-natural garden needs. That and a whole lot of patience... and sunscreen. It really was my mother's idea, and with the support of our father and four pairs of assistant helping hands (for pulling weeds and watering after sunset to reduce water waste) and dare I say it was one of her best ideas. We started about two years ago, last year was hard, but I have big hopes for the coming months even though I'll be busy with work and studies and all my other goals... this is one of those projects that renew every year and it is BEYOND worth the effort- you can trust me on this. Lessons & tips: Wear sunscreen (PLEASE make sure to do some research and use a safe natural sunscreen!) and make a bug repellent mixture: Resources: On sunscreens- chemical ones have ingredients that contribute to CAUSE CANCER!!! |

How I did it: I made raised boxes, filled them with compost, peat and vermiculite and planted heirloom seeds. It was a dry summer so it was hard to keep on top of it. With raised boxes, though, there are almost no weeds which is awesome and makes being organic alot easier! Read how I did it…

I did this in my last house but so far in this one (6 years) I have only grown rhubarb and strawberries, plus the apples and cherry trees that were already here. Well this week a dozen fresh strawberry plants were put in a planter and some cut and come again salad and herbs were sown. The larger herb bed has been dug over and two raised beds have been built ready to sow into at the weekend.
The compost bins were set up a couple of years ago and have been receiving peelings, hedge trimmings, grass cuttings, cardboard etc ever since and the muck in them is beautiful black stuff so that will be getting added to the raised beds.

An organic garden is one of the best fulfilling things in the world. Knowing that your food is pure and picked right off the vine, it makes me feel I have accomplished nirvina in the garden. The tomatoes are so juicy and sweet. They are not like the store greenhouse tomatoes, which are hard and tasteless.
Sades loves pi.
And it’s not just because summer is over. When I added this goal, I had this idea of growing a tomato, a pepper, and some herbs…nothing big and amazing…just a few plants. I can grow the herbs fine but the fruit/veggies were a complete failure. I guess I could say I half accomplished this and only half gave up.

Well, for right now, I’m going to have to put this goal on the backburner. I will resurrect it someday… hopefully soon… when I actually have some space to pursue growing my own tomatoes… garlic… spices, etc. But, for now, I’ll let it go… so sad…

i actually have one of these now! it’s mostly just seeds and dreams right now (and a few little plants), so i won’t check it off the list quite yet. in fact, i need to bite into my very own organic tomato before i’ve really made it.
but so far i have two little heart-shaped beds, one with five tomato plants and a few basil plants in the middle (the bruschetta bed) and another with four kinds of pepper (red bell, jalapeno, thai hot, and serrano. i love peppers) and one japanese eggplant. then one the outskirts i have a cucumber plant, a zucchini plant and a sad-looking bunch of cilantro. i planted marigolds on the perimeter because apparently they repel certain pests. and oh, i had room for one more little raised bed so i threw bok choy and scallion seeds in there, but if they’re not up in ten days, i’ll throw something else in there.
anyway, i’m so excited!
Sometimes it seems like everyone in town here grows organic. Of course, that’s not true: but most everyone wishes they could. I’d like to grow just some food this year. Last year, all we managed was mint, strawberries, and sunflower seeds. See picture of me, in front of one of our sunflowers! Yay!
