To put it plainly… Shanghai is my family’s origin.
Which, of course, in its own right would explain exactly why I would ever feel the need to live there.
I dream about it. I think about it. And I hope that in the end I will have the will power to achieve what I so long for and wish to be.
I think about the family I have living there… People that I am unfamiliar with which should not be the case at all… And the memories I will not be able to share with them. And the places that have left my parents with memories. Things that I want to see and experience before time consumes or changes it…
Great ever-changing city. It was hard moving here all alone. You need some kind of support network definitely. But there’s a great expat community here if you’re willing to give it a go. People are nice but you need to learn Mandarin. When I think about moving after this, I know I’ll miss the city.. warts, wafting bad smells and all. Haha..
... and I definitely would go back again! Get a job there, they’re always looking for good people, and enjoy this pulsing city! Ohh, and try to catch some chinese / shangainese, the people appreciate that a lot, when you try to communicate with them in their language (but that’s the same as at other places, isn’t it?). It’ll open you an another world – besides the fact that it will make the living there much more easier for you…
You can meet a lot of ex-pats, foreigners (when you want) at usual suspect places, like Malone’s, which is always a good point to start ;-)
Lived there in 1986 .. can’t imagine all the changes. Hopefully will be going back this yr for a visit.
