My friends & I are almost done with our lease on our house near school… as soon as ours is up and my boyfriend’s is up, he & I are moving in together! We’re looking for something outside of the city (more north), which we are really excited for. Now… just gotta find a place that’s our favorite! 1 month ago

How I did it: i changed careers and got a new job in a new city, newark, nj. ive always loved the city. it has a lot of heart, character, and history. i decided to move here because i wanted to be closer to my job and i wanted to share the experience of living in the city with its residents and with my students.
i looked on craigslist and in the local newspaper. i drove and walked around the neighborhoods i was interested in. i viewed quite a few places before deciding on one. ultimately, i chose it because of its location. it was across the street from a beautiful park, near public transportation, near downtown, near my job, and near major highways. when i say near, i mean they are all within walking distance! furthermore, it was within my price range. there wasnt many places cheaper that offered parking. there was one place that was about $50 cheaper but its was 3 miles further from work and about 5 miles from downtown.
lastly, they offer short term leases. so if i find something nicer, i can move in 6 months. i am happy with my pick. Read how I did it… 9 months ago

Well, I was approved for the house! Woohoo! I have to sign the lease in person which I can’t do until I move out there, so I’m going to leave this on my list until that happens. But hopefully there are no issues with that and my roommates don’t like, secretly give someone else my room before I get there. 11 months ago

The property managers for the house called me yesterday and said I’d need a cosigner (a weird condition of their lease that if one of the roommates needs one, they all do, and I think M mentioned having needed one). Not a huge deal, I had my parents fill out the form (thanks guys). But I’m hoping that, since they didn’t just reject me outright, that’s a good sign? They got back to me pretty quickly after I submitted my application so hopefully they’ll process my parents’ stuff just as quickly.
Fingers crossed!
EDIT: about a minute after posting this they called and said the signatures got cut off when I scanned the form. Actually what happened is they sent me the scanned (blank) form initially and it cut off the area where they were supposed to sign so they never did… whatever. They’ll sign it tonight, I’ll send it again tomorrow. 11 months ago

Things are looking good! I spoke to M about the house. It all sounds good. I called the company that owns it and am waiting on them to call back (it’s still before opening time on the west coast). They have to run a credit check before I can be added to the lease. Hopefully that all goes smoothly so that I don’t have to think about it any more and I have somewhere to go when I show up in August. 12 months ago

Ahh things are looking good for this one house. There are multiple things I really like about it: I’ll have two roommates, there’ll be two dogs living there, and it’s cheaper than a lot of the other places I looked at (more like my original price range before I started to get desperate and include more expensive places). I really hope it all works out. The only issue is that the lease starts in July, and I won’t be moving until August, but it’s inexpensive enough that even if I have to pay the full month’s rent it won’t be a huge deal, and maybe I can work something out with the roommates to only pay part of it since I won’t be there at all. 12 months ago

Emailed two more people over the weekend and they both emailed me back today! Nice to not be ignored. Hopefully one of them works out. 12 months ago

I have been working on this all month, and it is just exhausting.
I’m moving across the country in August. It’s a college town, so there’s tons of housing geared towards students, but also tons of competition for it.
I both don’t want to and can’t afford to live by myself, so I must find roommates. But since I live 3,000 miles away, no one wants to live with someone they haven’t met. When I say we could skype, everyone just moves on to the next person on their list.
The only people I know are other incoming physics students, who I specifically don’t want to live with (because we’ll be seeing each other all day at work and it just seems like too much potential for disaster).
There’s also the problem of many leases running June-May as opposed to August-July which is what I need. Not really into paying rent for the whole summer when I won’t be out there yet.
I’ve been considering maybe signing a lease for a 2-bedroom apartment myself and then being the one to turn down potential roommates. But that presents its own set of problems, since once again, I am 3,000 miles away: I won’t be able to see the apartment in person and neither will my roommate.
I’m just not sure what else I can do at this point. 12 months ago

this is going to take a while. Hoping to update my resume and find a part-time job to go with my full-time job to help out :) 15 months ago

After a marathon house-hunting trip, we finally found a ground-floor suite that we love! 2 bedrooms and a beautiful living room with a bay window (love). It’s a little bit further east than I would have liked, but I think it’s worth the extra commute.

I moved into my new place in the middle of March. It’s really neat. I live in a room of a seven bedroom, 3 story, family-away-from-family house. There are currently 5 other people that live here, including the girl that owns the house. We range in ages from 20-32 and all get along great. It’s just like a little family, we argue, we make up, we hug, make dinner together. It’s great!! 21 months ago
