I’ve just realised this goal doesn’t mention fish at all, but last week has raised my awareness of the issues involved in fishing.
Apart from plastic bags, bottles and pieces, most of what we found on the Cornish beaches was fishing net/string and fishing lines, which are potentially harmful to wildlife as seals and dolphins can get tangled up in them. I already vaguely knew about dolphin-friendly tuna, but there are all sorts of other issues regarding sustainability.
Ethical fish is available in places like Planet Organic, so from now on if I eat fish I’m going to go for that. There’s a site here with more information.
There’s no doubt that the intensive farming methods used in this country are revolting and most of us are in collective denial about what goes on, preferring not to think about it and buy our meat and chicken wrapped up in plastic from the supermarket, ideally in such a processed form that it doesn’t even look recognisable as coming from an animal.
Two reasons for buying proper meat: a) it’s not as cruel (ok the animal ends up dead but at least it had a reasonable life first), and b) it tastes better.
The area I slip up on occasionally is when I’m eating out and forget that restaurants don’t generally have the same standards. So I need to try to remember to be vegetarian when eating out.
