Now my 5 year old son is learning - I want to too ! 5 months ago

I did start learning to play about 19 years ago (wow, how time flies by), but didn’t stick to it because at the time I had a small keyboard which did not have full size piano keys, so I was not able to progress. Now he has a full size digital piano (didn’t want him to have the same problem) I’m getting back into it and am loving it (I’m also finding that it’s all still there in my memory banks so it’s no big deal, it wasn’t as if I was ever trying to be a professional !)

I just bought myself a keyboard to learn the basics. I think it would be easier now that I can play a guitar than if just started with no music knowledge, lets see how it goes from now

First off, DO NOT take a single lesson. A piano teacher will teach you to sit like a robot in an uncomfortable position, and how to read music, so you become an UNATRUL musician. I to this day, cannot read music, and Im glad. If you practice enough, it should feel natrul to you. But ofcourse you should still learn the names of the notes and chords.

ALL of THE BEATLES NEVER LEARNED HOW TO READ MUSIC. And look where they got. They played by ear, natrully, without lessons.

I just hate piano lessons, i mean, In not out to be the next freaking Mozart, Im just out to play an instrument and have fun with it. Once you start getting good, piano will be the funnest thing you ever do, aaaahhhhh, just sitting there, not worrying about posture, not messing with a stupid book, and just playing some songs you love.

At least I know I’m getting somewhere. I got into Ithaca College for Music Education, and this semester I’m studying Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in D major WTC Bk I, Haydn’s Sonata in e minor, Chopin’s Scherzo in Bb minor, and Barber’s Excursions Op. 20. Wish me luck! I’m studying with Dr. Jennifer Hayghe, who is excellent and a really nice person, if you’ve heard of her. Anyways, I’m in college, and I’m still in the process, and will be for a lifetime.

There is advice here that I find very useful:

Okay, I’ve seen Chris Martin play piano live this weekend. Amazing!! I need to start taking some lessons! I just have to afford it first. Why does it have to be so expensive in my town?

My mom taught me how to play the piano starting when I was about 5 years old. Through the years, I’ve played in recitals and in jazz band in high school. Today, I very seldom play, but sit down to play the few songs I know by heart. I cannot read music for the life of me, I have to write in the notes. But, I would love to be able to read the music like a book and be able to sit down and play anything.

This is one of my true passions in life. My heart gets all warm when i think about it. I love that feeling! :D

I have never in my life taken a single piano lesson. I started by my self when I was 11 years old and has never stopped since. It is amazing how much you can learn by your own. No one has ever forced me to play and I have never played for the cause of anyone but myself.

8 years have passed and a few moths ago I got my first piano. It was one of the most amazing moments in my life, playing it for the first time. When I think about it I almost begin to cry. It is silly, I know, but I can’t help it!

This is one of my long-term-life-goals, to master the piano completely. This one is just for me.
