ride a bike in Amsterdam

On a whim we rented bicycles and rode around Amsterdam on a Sunday. It was great in the morning as not a lot of people were up and moving around however as the day progressed more and more people were cycling around.

It was a great experience riding around although dodging the pedestrians who amble across the bike path leisurely made for several near misses.

This is fun but rather scary at first. There are not many cars in the city, but basically the cyclists act with about as much patience and good will (especially towards tourists) as car drivers do in regular cities. So watch out! I’m told that there is something they shout in Dutch if you get in the way, which translates roughly as ‘I’ll kill your bitch mother’. Something like that anyway. Other than that, the Dutch are a lovely people.
