I started doing hatha yoga, which is great for beginners, five years ago. I took a couple of classes at the YMCA, but mostly I did it on my own, with yoga cards and videos. I did it regularly for a few years, but then I got bored with my routine. Last year I started downloading yoga podcasts from iTunes (20 minute yoga podcasts and Yoga Journal.) I discovered Ashtanga Yoga, which is more challenging, but it was exactly what I neeeded! The Yoga Journal website is also a great source of information and videos. I did Lotus pose, for the first time, a few months ago. It felt amazing!

Went Saturday AND Sunday … 3hour yoga marathon! Set me up for the week. Also bought a 20 class pass … on my way to flexibility and a ‘whatever’ attitude :))

So today was first class of the beginners course. Okay it is clear now: I am not an absolute beginner. Because it was kind of boring. And I kept thinking how they did it better at the other studio. Better explained, more attention to the body (and avoiding possible causes of injury!), better developed class set-up, etc. Only thing was that this studio is much larger which means more room to move. If we had moved.
But then again, this was the first lesson. And it was nice to do something again. So I’ll just go again next week.
As for socially… Everyone was clearly awkward which was a little strange. I was one of the more outgoing types in the group. (Not counting the snobby keep-to-our-own-kind expat wives…) I believe I was the only one making a joke during the short tea instance after class. Oh well…

candiedsky just finished her exhilarating workout. :))))
I definitely do it way more than before, but I don’t feel like I’m doing it as often as I do because I simply enjoy it. I do it because I feel like it will make me healthier and more flexible(maybe even happier, too), and that’s good. I just want to do the poses and moves mainly because I enjoy it. Not because I feel like I have to.
That just defies the basic yoga principles…

I kicked myself in the butt and signed up for a beginners class. At another studio, I must add, because I’m still not going anywhere near the one I described before. The one I will go to now do have some spiritual thingy going on but I specifically asked about that and they told me it was really not about that. So I’m going to accept that for now, let’s see how it turns out.
Classes start Monday. There will be a book also, included in the price, which will help with practicing at home. Here goes!

i started out with just one DVD and a really crappy mat. i was also disheartened by my lack of flexibility. it took me a long time to get to it because i had to go through stacks and stacks of DVDs (borrowed from library lol ;) cheaper than buying) before i found routines that worked for me and didn’t require me to contort myself, or stand on my head (there really was one like that!). then i invested in an actual yoga mat, not the $3 piece of foam from Wal-mart. they are cheap at Old Navy and have a pretty flower pattern on them. i soon found a yoga DVD series that worked for me, its called Namaste. and i’ve been doing it every day since, as opposed to once every two weeks or so!
