How to learn to play flamenco guitar
How I did it: I moved to Barcelona, to a neighborhood called Gracia. They have a strong Gitano (Gypsy) barrio here. I saw an ad for flamenco guitar lessons and called the guy.
We met and although I was just learning Spanish we got a long musically and started lessons.
These ended up being lessons in the culture of flamenco as much as how to play guitar. The lessons were in the Gitano community center and I got to know many of the people there.
I had lessons twice a week, I recorded them and took them home and practiced to the recording to try and match as close as possible to the sound of my teacher.
The hardest part was my right hand. Coming from the US most of my guitar playing was with a pick and concentrated on technique with the left hand.
Getting the rhythms and the banging of the guitar body was difficult but in the end I could play a few different varieties of flamenco.
I stopped the lessons as it became apparent that I would never be the next Paco de Lucia and it was taking too much time practicing this one style to get there.
I may pick them up again later with a different teacher but for now if someone asks to play some flamenco I can do it.
Lessons & tips: 1. Forget everything you know about conventional right hand technique and learn how to use your fingers.
2. Record your lessons and really try to match the sound of your teacher.
3. Try to play with a cajone player or a dancer or flamenco inger once in a while to get the real feeling of what you're supposed to be doing. The flamenco guitar is a supporting instrument.
4. Get a good flamenco guitar.
5. Practice.

I started out playing heavy metal stuff on guitar. Then i heard this and was like this sounds pretty sweet. If you can help me reach this goal then DO IT!! lol. Icould really use the help.
I started off wanting to play when I had a roommate who was learning classical. After learning how to actually play a song with some melody (House of the Rising Sun) I actually felt like I could do it despite having small hands and no musical talent. But, I wanted to learn flamenco! And it’s impossible learning to read music looking at flamenco.
I purchased two books recently when I decided to pick it up again after my guitar was sitting for years. The method books are amazing! I was able to start sight-reading music in less than an hour, though very very poorly.
The books I got were:
Solo Guitar Playing – by Frederick Noad
The Christopher Parkening Guitar Method – by Christopher Parkening
I switch between the books because they are both great but teach slightly differently and it’s nice having different things to practice.
I have started a site called myflamencoguitar.com - sheet music, simple exercises, music theory, chords, youtube videos and book reviews. Bit by bit, I think it is possible to follow the steps and learn how to play flamenco. All feedback is welcome - I’ll try to improve if you tell me what you are looking for! THanks

and I never went back to lessons. I am going to add a new goal, something like “Improve my musicianship” which will include Flamenco guitar, but as a single focus goal, I’m just not going to get around to this soon.
I have played guitar for some time and now I have started a blog with weekly audio updates. There will be TAB if you cannot do it by ear. Have a look – http://miguelbengoa.com/wordpress/

First lesson, and, it is as I suspected.
I do everything wrong for flamenco. I am a self-taught guitarist playing rock and blues. I have off and on played some flamenco but my techique, as I have discovered, is not so good.
It is very hard to relearn things as at such a low level I can play the stuff easily the wrong way, and feel like I’ve had a stroke trying to do it the right way. For instance, when finger plucking strings, your first joint down by the pad of the finger should be stiff, like in a cast. Most of the force of the pluck should come from your main finger joint up at the hand.
So, it turns out, that my first joint has been doing all the work all these years and refuses to relinquish control.
So, I’m sitting there trying to pluck a string properly with one finger, over and over. My teacher looking displeased the whole time.
This is going to be quite a challenge.
But, I know that if I do it right (relearn it correctly) that hopefully the ceiling I keep hitting will be much higher and the hard stuff will become possible because my fingers are doing it correctly.
At least the pressure to show some skill is off. I am pretty sure my teacher thinks I’m retarded. Maybe I should have slept last night.

I had a lovely conversation at the wedding sanvea and I attended this weekend with a Vice President of a HUGE corporation who finds time to play in a band with his son. We talked about guitar, and I kept wishing that I could say that I actually played more. I talked about flamenco, but it’s been so long, I can only remember 3 or 4 introductory songs.
So yesterday I called a local guitar shop and asked them if anybody there teaches flamenco guitar. They do have somebody, so I gave them my name and number. I can’t do it on my own, apparently, so I’ll now harness the power of spending cash as a motivator. That and the power of not wanting to embarrass myself every week by not having practiced.
It’s not as pure a motivation as the true love of the music, but my job is pretty hard to compete with.
