nepeta43this needs to become a habit

I’ve noticed that I’m more likely to talk to people on the street after I’ve finished work; it’s feels easier after I’ve spent 8 hours talking to customers.

I think that being able to talk to people easily is a matter of habit rather than skill/experience. I’m the same way with writing; if I write every day, it comes easily, but if I don’t write regularly, it becomes difficult to get back to it.

When I have a day off, and I’m by myself, I’m more closed and don’t feel like talking to people. I think I might be having a hard time expressing thoughts because I’m just not used to talking.

In a previous post I said that I want to be around people more often and practice talking. This hasn’t been going as planned. My work schedule prevents me from going to anywhere or doing anything in a group. (Everything starts at 7pm or later. I go to sleep at 7pm to be able to get to work on time. It’s not fair.) 1 year ago

nepeta43a goal with many parts

I think that one of the reasons for this goal being so comlicated is that it involves so many things. Communication can be verbal, nonverbal, or written.

I’ve just realized that in my previous entries I only wrote about verbal communication. I’ve also been trying to improve my nonverbal communication, and I’m much better with that now. My written communication skills are obviously very good, so I guess I got 2 out of 3 so far :) 2 years ago

nepeta43practice

I find it very hard to express my thoughts. I’m hoping it will get easier with practice, so I’m trying to be around people more often and talk to them. I usually don’t say much though. I think of so many things to say, but I don’t know how to say it, I can’t put the words together.

Well, obviously I can, if I can write like this…but it takes a very long time, and in a real-time conversation you have to respond immediately, which I usually can’t do :S 2 years ago

nepeta43a difficult one

Of all the goals on my list, this is the most important one to me. It’s also one of the most difficult. It’s frustrating. 2 years ago

MelanieI'm on my way...

I think I managed to make some progress towards this goal. I know that, sometimes, when I explain something to someone else and it totally makes sense to me, they end up with a “WTH is she talking about?” expression on their face. That’s because I think at a whole other level than most people – I’m the one who is thinking out of the box, because I’ve never been in there to begin with (or I’m in the box and the rest of the world is outside, whichever you prefer). I’m neither conceited nor cocky, I’m just different (people who know me would agree xD).

Anyway, it’s not just about being able to explain things in a way that other people actually understand me. It’s also about using standarized language (in German – I have no problems whatsoever to use it in English and don’t take my texts on 43Things as “standarized language”, they’re a mixture of both). I got better, but it’s still not natural for me to use standarized language (if your whole family speaks nothing but colloquial speech and you’ve been raised hearing nothing but… you get my point, it’s hard to get rid of – we’re all creatures of habit sigh )

However, I hope I’ll get there in the end. Standarized language sounds much better to me. In my opinion, it’s more sophisticated and, in comparison to colloquial speech, not everyone is able to use it – I like things which are not common. 3 years ago
