Like most people I have a jar of pennies sitting in my window sill. When times necessitate I spend an hour or so sorting them into money bags and cash them in at the bank.
This is this afternoons goal.
How I did it: I usually drop all my pennies and 5ps into a glass jar and then spend an afternoon once and a while putting them into money bags and taking them to the bank to deposit.
I always have a few odd coins left that dont make it into the bags. So for the last few weeks I have been concentrating on not accumulating any change in the first place.
I have been paying for items using exact change where possible and if its not only using the minimum amount so you get less change! Its getting a little obessional but I am really enjoying the challenge and I think its become a habit.
I don't really mind spending the extra time when paying although maybe it slows down the queue behind me. But its a perfectly acceptable thing to do. It is still money after all. I think that maybe the cashiers might sometimes be in need of the extra change in their tills.
Lessons & tips: Have a coin purse
Get your money ready as you stand in line so you know roughly what you have
Maybe also keep a penny jar to put any stray coins you find around your room. Never use coinstar or simillar to cash pennies. Take it to your bank - they should count it for free as long as you put it in money bags.
Keep calm and don't feel pressured to just use a note - its not embarrasing, just keeping you aware of the money that you are spending.
Resources: Bank - ask for money bags ahead of time.

£51.48
€4.53
F28.95 (now worthless)
$0.25
+ assorted other coins, including many I couldn’t identify, and a British half penny from 1943.
got about $28.. pretty good.
I think i might start collecting other change a bit.. see if i can get a bit more next time, haha.
Ended up going to the bank to cash them in.
BUT! found a bag of just penny paper rolls!! Office Depot!
I’ve got this 4ft plastic coke bottle that I’ve been putting pennies (and other, larger) coins in for years. I think in a year, when I graduate, will be a good time to open it and get some reward. :D
This is just something to remind me…
I went to the bank and they dont sell them anymore! had to go to the dollar store, where, for $1, i can buy a bag of papers for rolling all types of coins. I cannot, however, just buy some for JUST PENNIES, which really sucks because I only rolled about $4.50 worth of pennies from the bag of papers that cost me $1.08. Somehow, this isn’t working out, and I didn’t realize you had to buy the papers. Oh, the joys of being a child and not having to pay for the penny papers.
I’ve rolled up 5 rolls so far. Manyyy pennies to go. I’m thinking it’s about 15.00 worth of pennies, maybe more. I have to collect them all. Either way, it is going in the bank.
there they wait…waiting for me to drop them into coinstar. and do i? no. ugh. there must be 5.00 worth there. 5.00 that could buy me something on ebay.
