careful- this will probably hurt you if you are within 10 yards of it, but to be safe stay about 50 yds away. What you do is, you get just five things- yeast, sugar, water, duct tape, and of course the bottle itself. You almost completely fill the bottle (save about 1/2 an inch) with water, then dump in a few spoonfuls of sugar. Then you put in several packets of yeast, screw the top back on, and put about 15 layers of duct tape around it to prevent leakage from initial cracks. Place the whole thing on a hot plate (which will be destroyed) and use aboput 50 yds of extension cords to distance yourself from it. DO NOT plug in the extension cords to any power source yet. just let it fester for about 5 days or so (i let it go for 9…). DO NOT get anywhere near the bottle. after about 5-9 days, plug in the hot plate (the hot plate itself should already be plugged into the ext. cords) and wait. I strongly suggest using protective eyewear and earplugs, as it will explode at about 500 psi and make an extraordinarily loud noise. The heat (and the alcohol made by the yeast), along with the pressure from the CO2 being made by the yeast, will make it explode. Send in the shrapnel for the free t-shirt.

i’m doing this for a science project!! i have heard that if you place it in the freezer full of water and leave it in there for a week it would crack! Is this true?

At Northwest Youth Corps, Fox chainsawed a MASSIVE log in half because it was blocking the trail, it must have been about a thousand pounds, and it rolled to the downhill side of the trail right over his nalgene bottle, which shattered…but that was him, not me. Later on we found some random nalgene and threw it at rocks trying to break it, it only dented though, until we put it on a stump and picked up this huge rock and threw it right on top…then it still only dented, but there was a small crack at the very top. It didn’t actually break though, I don’t think.
