I ordered “PHP 6 and MySQL” by Larry Ullman, and have been going through it starting at the beginning of August. Its going well so far, seems to get easier as you go along. Once i have finished the book i will hopefully know enough to be able to apply what i’ve learnt, and start learning ‘properly’ – by doing it by myself. Just have to make sure i do some every day, so i dont forget it.

I installed a small self contained webserver onto my pc which I downloaded from http://wampserver.com – it has php/mysql/apache already configured
I then bought an excellent PHP IDE editor (cost approx $30) called phpdesigner – http://www.mpsoftware.dk/ – and then basically downloaded scripts from http://hotscripts.com and phpfreaks.com looked at them and then played around with them a little before sitting down and trying it all myself.
I made a load of mistakes a long the way but the goodthing about doing it locally is that if you mess up you can delete it and start again.
All I will advise is save often and always backup your work.
ProphetPX is at home, full from dinner, finally from GOOD food this time! ;-)
I already know some PHP and some MySQL, but not alot … I wish! I have learned some though.
My favorite PHP IDE/editor is PHP Edit from Waterproof Software! :-)

Also, on a related note, my favorite IDE/editor for MySQL database administration has been Embarcadero’s “SQL Tuner” (Now “DB Artisan”):

Learning any language is a process. I’ll consider this task complete because I am no longer actively looking to learn. I feel like I know the basics, and I know where to go to add wrinkles and learn more.
I want to possess skills that I can use beyond my business degree, I think this is a good one to learn.
I would like to learn this starting this weekend. I aim to become good enough to do this at a professional level.
liquidizer is listening to Depeche Mode, after reading a post about them on 43T
I have booked myself on a PHP course starting January
I’m at an intermediate level now, able to navigate most all code and write code on my own with reference. I can handle setup of Mysql and integration within PHP
