A colleague of mine read about an open call for extras for Spiderman several years ago. A huge fan of Spidey, I couldn’t say no, so we both got up in the pre-dawn darkness, rode an hour to a comic book store on Melrose, then boarded a school bus with several other sleepy-eyed hopefuls for the set (another hour/hour-and-a-half away).
It’s the street fair scene where there’s a band playing and the Green Goblin flies in and bombs the place all to hell.
It only takes place for a minute or two on the screen, but was a full two-day shoot (I was only there for one day).
THE GOOD: I can always point to that movie and say “I was in that.” Also, I got to see the Green Goblin’s costume in person, and much sooner than would have been made available to the public (although nowadays it’s impossible to keep things like that under wraps).
THE NOT-SO-GOOD: Long day with lots of downtime, which wouldn’t be so bad, but to fill the scene they bussed in many kids from the local high schools. It truly was like those anxiety dreams where you find yourself back in high school except you’re at your current age, and can’t believe that at one point in your past you actually acted like this.
My final recommendation: DO IT! Google “hollywood extras” and see what comes back…you’re bound to find listings of movies that are in need of extras, especially if you’re close to major cities like LA, NY, or (probably less so) Chicago.
Either way, you can always point to the DVD while you’re in Blockbuster with your friends and say “I was in that!”
