How to make a corset"The painful fingertips were worth it!"
How I did it: I found an awesome pattern on the interwebs. And thought I was up for the challenge! And what the heck? Why not make it out of thick rubber. My sewing machine was not up for this material, so I made this bugger entirely by hand. The details are reflective tape (which is just AWESOME under clublights!) that was easily attached to the rubber. NOTE: Before this I only made hats and mittens, so you don't need to be an expert to do this!
Lessons & tips: - Make sure the eyelets you use are made out of two seperate pieces that fit into eachother (not the kind that folds at the back, these will rip out). - If you also plan on using a sturdy material, use leatherpoint needles (be it for handwork or sewing machine). Resources: - Art and craft shops! - *insert name of obscure rubber factory here* - Can't really help you there since I don't even remember where I found the material I used.

More "How I Did It" stories
How I did it: I joined a costume construction class at my University, and made a complete 18th century gown, including two corsets (one mock-up, one real). First I took measurements for my model, created a dress form (in the form I wanted my corset to make) and then using a pattern from the period, I blew the pattern up (from a book), and created the corset! Now I just need to make one for myself :) Read how I did it…

I’ve been wanting to do this for a VERY long time… Years, actually. So this year, I decided to make a corset to use on Halloween. This should push me hard enough in the right direction, I think =] I’ve started a mock up already, cut the pieces, sewn them together. I’m going to skip boning on this one, and instead make flat felled seams. All I need is to set the grommets and lace it up…Hopefully, then I’ll be able to see what needs to be altered. I would fit it onto my dressform, but I’ve gained about 4 inches on my hips…
=D
I’m excited, guys! Wish me luck!

Really, this is the beginning of the ‘Sewing a reproduction Victorian outfit’ goal, which is, I admit, a pretty vague goal to begin with. The corset is really the foundation for all of it. And if I can make one that fits properly, I’ll finally have a pattern that I can use to make others.
The particular corset I have in mind is for the Victorian outfit I plan on making for this Halloween. All black, with a black chemise and black drawers. Black skirt and shirtwaist or dress. Black hat. Black accessories. Victorian-gothy and slightly scary.
I accidentally sewed all the seam allowances as 17mm rather than 15mm which works out as about 1inch smaller than the pattern measurements.
That said, it seems to fit fine so I guess I’m between sizes.
Things I learnt:
1) You need serious wire cutters to cut spiral boning. And two pairs of pliers to get the end caps on securely.
2) Knitting needles are useful for stretching boning channels.
3) Having a quilting guide makes getting even boning channels much easier.
4) Lace trim is good at hiding any binding disasters.
5) It’s not actually as difficult as you think.
Planning a black one now to perfect my technique
It shouldn’t be too tough. I already used boning in my wedding dress.
You can get it at almost any fabric store and it comes in lots of different varieties.
Borrow a corset from someone so you can study where the boning goes. Buy a pattern and give it a shot.
It’s really ridiculous how expensive they are these days. I could understand some patterns, and some antique corsets being really price-y, but just a simple zip-up corset like the ones at hot topic? Yeah, gimme my sewing machine.
ive been trying to make a corset for a couple of weeks but the only thing i am missing is a courset

I’m working on a purple corset. This time I’ve gotten further than ever before. I even put the boning in it.
I really want to be a honed tradesperson when it comes to making corsets. I have to start somewhere…why not here. If anyone here is in the Austin, TX area and want to get together and make corsets please contact me.
Corsets are so expencive and I would just like to have a personal one and no one else can have it. Corsets rock end of.
