All Linux (NO WINDOWS!) at home 13 months ago

Everything has gone smooth. We started with an Ubuntu LiveCD to smooth over the Windows XP to Ubuntu transition. Everything works the same, mostly faster on the same hardware, so the obstacles are fairly minor. Biggest problem was having to buy a third-party printer driver (TurboPrint) to support my Canon Pixma printer. I don’t even miss Windows. Still stuck using Windows at work, but that’s out of my hands…

Right now I have my Dell Inspiron set up with Ubuntu and Windows because I was afraid to switch all the way. It’s partitioned half and half, 10GB each. I would go 100% over to Ubuntu except I can’t figure out how to install things on it!! Therefore I’m limited to the default programs that come on the CD. I probably should just get a book on this but I guess I’m not motivated enough yet.

It’s supposed to be as easy as Windows but I’m totally baffled when it comes to installing anything on it. :/ Would love some guidance so I can complete this transition!

Ubuntu, The Hedgehog 4 years ago

Ever since the Hoary Hedgehog release of Ubuntu Linux was made available, I’ve been enjoying the heck out of Linux. I’d say at this point there’s no going back. With Ubuntu, Open Office, Gimp, and Firefox, I have no reason to use any MS stuff at home anymore.

I’ve been using Ubuntu more at home recently. It is definitely the most well-polished and friendliest distro I’ve used. And I’m excited, cuz the next version “Hoary Hedgehog” will be out in a few days. I’m anxious to see the improvements. Freshly pressed CDs will be in the mail soon.

Linux at Home - Windows at Work 4 years ago

Windows is the platform we use at work.

But that doesn’t mean I have to use it at home. The more I develop for the Web and the more I collaborate with other cool developers, the more I see value in using a platform more friendly to open-source.
