http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgJh7p79ons was made to explain some of the troubles 1-800 SUICIDE has been having with the federal government. After trying for over 2 years to get the federal governement to take action and pay KBHC/1-800 SUICIDE’s claim SAMHSA/HHS denied the claim, funded a competing government owned hotline, and is trying to hijack the phone numbers by going to the FCC and asking them to take away our lines.

since they were falling far short of their goal, but I did make a donation on Friday. I hope they can find a way to keep going, they provide an immensely important service.

My father’s father committed suicide before I was even born. My physics teacher committed suicide a month into my senior year of high school. My first cousin committed suicide ten years ago this September. Other relatives have attempted it, and an in-law succeeded. And as an EMT I’ve been called to houses where people have attempted or succeeded. Suicide touches everyone, and this hotline does help prevent tragedies.
I’ve made a donation, which you can do via paypal or mail or credit card. Even if you can’t make a donation, you can sign the petition and you can send a letter.

I found it moving and I think this is a worthy cause in need of help. I have signed their position and given a donation; I would also urge others to do this.

This is a very personal issue to me as one of my best friends when I was in High School committed suicide.
My mom used to be a suicide prevention counselor.
We need places like this and people out there to help those who think they can’t live another day. We need to help them see the hope in the future.

I signed the petition and sent a letter, though I’m not sure how much good the electronic versions actually do. My Paypal account is low right now but I will try to send a donation later this week, and take a whack at writing a snail mail letter to my representative and Senators!
