getting drupal's big picture 3 months ago

The Pro Drupal Dev book is great. Halfway through having learned about modules, nodes, hooks, menu items, etc I was having trouble pulling together the big picture: how do all these make a site?

Took a step back and thought about a target site archetype: sections, pages, page types, page sections/modules. Mapping the site out this way, creating a page taxonomy (page types and their content components) I was better able to relate to the nodes I’ll need, modules, and even admin behavior and permissions (what should be enabled/disabled, and for whom).

This will help a lot as I go forward with the reading (will probably be revisiting a few chapters) and will probably be revisiting this (both the notes I took and the exercise itself) several times in the near future.

    Diggin It! 4 months ago

Really diggin’ how much of an App Framework Drupal is, and not just a CMS. Powerful stuff! Not to get ahead of myself but originally wondered what kind of integration it has with CakePHP. Now thinking that may be redundant. Still, I like Cake too. For eating and coding.

Just bought Pro Drupal Development by John K. VanDyk. This and a syllabus I just finished putting together for myself will help me organize the Drupal learning process for me. My goal is ultimately to develop mastery of a content management system in order to build websites with it for work (day job and personal).

I’ve worked with a few already in formal and informal settings, having this goal will help me put the pieces together so I can fully incorporate this into the tool belt. It’s great to be able to build sites for folks who need them but to give them something they can maintain for themselves (teach a person to fish) is the ultimate goal. This will take me several steps closer to that end, I’m hoping.

Almost done with this 6 months ago

I learned the basics already, but i wouldn’t say i’m complete with this, I still don’t get Taxonomy and vocabulary…and a couple other things, sure wish I knew someone around me who’s good with Drupal. i’d definitely pay for some lessons

Instant Drupal project backlog or how I learn by doing 9 months ago

I’ve been wanting to learn a comprehensible content management system ever since I had to start dealing with Plone. Plone looks great on paper and if you need all it has to offer it’s great. But it’s a monster to comprehend and to run. Not the best choice for your average cheap shared hosting situation.

So this summer I interviewed with a big Drupal shop who had done some very nice work using Drupal (didn’t get the job). In the course of preparing for the interview I gave Drupal a look and decided to use it sometime in the future.

Yesterday I met with the San Diego chapter of the Sierra Club and we decided to use Drupal to move their content off the national CMSish infrastructure and I’ll be doing the development.

In addition my co-worker wants to convert http://www.azrarecords.com/ to a CMS and yesterday at the Morley Field dog park one of Bucky’s long time fans said she needs a CMS and wants me to help her.

So Drupal it is for the near future. I took a look last night and learned a lot in a short period. That says a lot for the ease of use.

Stay tuned for more Drupal comprehension updates. And NO this doesn’t mean I’m giving up Django. I’d never do that.

Both a painful and rewarding experience. I still think I enjoy things like ruby and rails much more, however ruby is good for small client projects that you know you won’t want to maintain in the long run (there are tons of drupal developers)

I was so excited to get this started and now that my IT boyfriend has gotten it up and running, I haven’t looked at it for weeks. I admit, it intimidates me to the extreme! I like online tools where templates are created and I add a splash of color, a dash of wisdom, a link or two and voila! Done! So, I’m interested in getting my hands dirty in something more earthy.
