bleach my hair

How I did it: Take:

• A silly teenage girl obsessed with blonde starlets and bored with her black hair
  
• Ignorance about the harmful effects of dyes and the benefits of alternative natural plant dyes
  
• Terrible taste - no knowledge at all of what suits her; did not even consider the possibility that blond hair does not suit everyone, and that it's not usually good to veer too far from your natural colour, especially with Asian skin tones
  
• Hairdressers who are terrible at giving fashion advice and who also bleach their beautiful black hair blond in a misguided attempt to look fashionable (often end up look like hookers)

And what do you get?

• Platinum blonde streaks in black hair - for a girl who's not going for a punky/shocking look, this just gives a zebra effect and best and a "what was she thinking???" horror at worst
  
• A washed-out complexion because light hair dulls asian skin (if the perfect shade of blonde isn't chosen and if it's not the whole head that's dyed) unlike black hair which enhances it
  
• Brittle, breaking, frizzy, fried dry hair from bleach which is really harmful to the health of your hair
  
• A very unhappy customer

Lessons & tips:

• Generally, I'd advise women of colour not to go too light. If you must go blonde, red, or even some shades of brunette, go to the best hairdressers who will advise you on the best shades for your complexion. When you go so far from your natural shade, you won't get away with just anything
  
• I'd advise strongly against bleach. I can't see what good it does anyone's hair. Henna, indigo, and other herbs, if used in their pure form are a lot better for your hair
  
• Remember that different colours suit better people. Work with what you have and don't try to veer to far from it.
  
• Remember that being natural is infinitely more attractive than being some bleached, fake-tanned barbie. Most guys I've spoken to prefer a girl who takes care of herself while she accepts how she is (not trying to change anything drastically) to one who's so insecure she can't even see her own assets
  
• Healthy hair, skin and body is beautiful, no matter what the colour or shape!
