How I did it: I used last.fm to look for new artists that were somewhat similar to what I listened to, I also checked the favourite bands of my friends. I do recollect reading some reviews from music magazines but I didn't make any interesting discoveries this way.The most important thing: I searched! for something new. Read how I did it…
Cesca is drawing cards.
How I did it: I registered on last.fm and I started to browse it randomly, discovering tons of interesting stuff. I followed recommendations form last.fm and from other users and I became more and more interested in music. Read how I did it…
I’ve just discovered Last FM. Will post about some of my discoveries once I’ve stopped coming.
Discovered this amazing band recently. Imagine Stuart Murdoch singing about blow jobs and the awkwardness of sex and you’re almost there…
And with lyrics like:
My boyfriend devoted to Christianity/ Put down your Old Testament and come to bed with me
and
Imagination was enough for me before/ Til you dropped your knickers on my bedroom floor
how could I not love them?!
Check ‘em oot!

Discovered this awesome gal when she was supporting Defiance, Ohio on their UK tour. I was actually much more impressed seeing her live, I don’t think some of the recordings convey the passion behind the songs really. Regardless, they’re excellent. Here’s some good ‘uns anyway:
Good stuff!
Back in the good ol’ days before work, college, and other adult responsibilities, I would spend hours searching for new bands. Back when my income was a little more disposable, I would spend all my money on shows and new CDs. I want to get back into to discovering new music. It shouldn’t be too hard with the internet at my fingertips!
I want to discover at least 5 new musicians each month. I really only need one day to find 5 new people through myspace. All I have to do is go to one artist’s myspace and then look through their friends, find one or two from there and then look through those people’s friends, etc. I want to try and find them all at the beginning of the month and then dedicate the entire month to listening to them—that way I can really find out if I like/dislike them.
I’ve already discovered three this week because I went to the Kevin Devine show last night. I’d only heard a couple of his songs before last night. He was actually my least favorite of the night. The band that opened for him (Brian Bonz) was really good and Sarah Jaffe (another opening act) was by far my favorite. She was completely my style of music and she had an amazing live show. She’s actually local so I plan on seeing her play again this summer. :)

On occasion of reaching the number of 500 artists (from 200+ while starting as I recollect) on my last.fm account (http://www.last.fm/user/laughing-cactus) I’d like to mark this goal as done.
I’ve made some fantastic musical discoveries, expanded and diversified my music taste a great deal and, most importantly, developed a new approach to music, constantly searching for the new tunes.
Even today I have a handful of bands to listen to (similar to Patrick Wolf, according to last.fm – well, I’ll see for myself :P)
I guess the three most important discoveries would be:
Emilie Autumn
Patrick Wolf
Edyta Geppert
but there are lots, lots more.

beautiful ethereal songs in a beautiful language I don’t understand.
also: Steppenwolf, Hannah Fury, Frank Zappa, Portishead, Sarah June.

an astounding medley of folk and electronic, with beautiful lyrics, sometimes melancholic (“Magpie”, “Teignmouth”), sometimes more energetic (“Tristan”). Unique climate.
I’m also on my way exploring Radiohead, but I’m not so fascinated by the band. Next on my list: Portishead (because of its similarity to Sneaker Pimps). I’ve also “discovered” Kelli Ali and a bunch of other vocalists, but I don’t plan on listening to them much.
I discovered also Aimee Mann’s “Borrowing Time”
and three hits in which I found something for myself:
1. Robbie Williams “Feel”
2. Meredith Brooks “Bitch”
3. Cher “Strong Enough”
on my list to listen: Bauhaus, Cat Power, Led Zeppelin, Frank Zappa, REM… quite a hotchpotch of styles xD
Generally I feel that soon I will be able to mark this goal as done – I developed in myself a certain “exploring” attitude to music, which is what I wanted.
I’ve really been enjoying this band! Check them out!
”...a style that strays on the borders of dream-pop, italo-disco, and psychedelic electronica without fully committing itself to one specific niche.”
