I’m going as soon as I’m free of debt and can leave the state for 2-3 months. I have a choice of two options that I’m considering. The first is to go alone. This was part of the original idea; I go solo and learn what it is to be completely self-reliant. The second option is to find an island large enough that two people could inhabit it without stepping on each other’s toes. This could be potentially life saving, as there would be someone else that I could go to for help and vice versa. If I went with option two, I would definitely be interviewing who went with me. I don’t want to live with someone else. I don’t even want to see their hut. I also don’t want to go with someone who is completely incapable of taking care of themselves. I’ll have my hands full with my own shelter, food and projects.
I’m contemplating what tools will be essential. Several things are already certain to make the list, such as a satellite phone, several knives and backup contacts. Anything that isn’t essential will be left behind, such as matches, maps, flashlights, hammers, nails, etc.
I’ve got a growing list of skills to master. Among those are extensive first aid, hunting and trap setting (which may or may not come in handy), fishing and plant identification. I’m pretty comfortable working with wood already and I’m an accomplished enough cook, so I’ll be able to build a shelter and have decent food.
I’ll be on a Pacific Island with some elevation for sanity’s sake (to explore and to fight boredom) and to account for any Tsunamis. Obviously I’ll need fresh water and a decent amount of vegetation in order to survive. I’ll probably screen out any islands with large predators or poisonous snakes, seeing as I do actually want to come back alive. Aside from these stipulations, I’ll be leaving most of it up to chance.
I’m taking my camera with me, along with lots of batteries and flash cards. This plus the sat phone are the only pieces of technology I’ll be taking. I really want to document this, so I’ll make a second technology exception to do it.
