2009?  — 1 week ago

I’m going as soon as I’m free of debt and can leave the state for 2-3 months. I have a choice of two options that I’m considering. The first is to go alone. This was part of the original idea; I go solo and learn what it is to be completely self-reliant. The second option is to find an island large enough that two people could inhabit it without stepping on each other’s toes. This could be potentially life saving, as there would be someone else that I could go to for help and vice versa. If I went with option two, I would definitely be interviewing who went with me. I don’t want to live with someone else. I don’t even want to see their hut. I also don’t want to go with someone who is completely incapable of taking care of themselves. I’ll have my hands full with my own shelter, food and projects.

I’m contemplating what tools will be essential. Several things are already certain to make the list, such as a satellite phone, several knives and backup contacts. Anything that isn’t essential will be left behind, such as matches, maps, flashlights, hammers, nails, etc.

I’ve got a growing list of skills to master. Among those are extensive first aid, hunting and trap setting (which may or may not come in handy), fishing and plant identification. I’m pretty comfortable working with wood already and I’m an accomplished enough cook, so I’ll be able to build a shelter and have decent food.

I’ll be on a Pacific Island with some elevation for sanity’s sake (to explore and to fight boredom) and to account for any Tsunamis. Obviously I’ll need fresh water and a decent amount of vegetation in order to survive. I’ll probably screen out any islands with large predators or poisonous snakes, seeing as I do actually want to come back alive. Aside from these stipulations, I’ll be leaving most of it up to chance.

I’m taking my camera with me, along with lots of batteries and flash cards. This plus the sat phone are the only pieces of technology I’ll be taking. I really want to document this, so I’ll make a second technology exception to do it.

Just chill  — 3 weeks ago

All i would need is a years supply of pot and just chill on the beach smoking weed, playing some tunes and drinking rum out of a coconut.

island living  — 1 month ago

i see a lot of people on here saying how nice it would be to live on an island…but have you really thought about it? considered it? i have.my Bible would be my first priority. what kind of boat would you need to go out on the pacific? i say pacific because there is no fresh water holes on the atlantic islands. pacific islands are more mountainous while the atlantic islands are more flat. so when a sunami comes do you want to be up high or standing level with a homemade surf board in your hands praying your gonna live through this? the boat you would need will have to sit high and the gas? well….guess we need a sail as well. gas will only run so long and you would want to save at least 20 gallons back for when you spotted your island to get to it in case of the wind or ocean pulling you away from it. soap? grandpas pine tar. its good as a body soap and very good for your hair. it can be used to wash clothes and keeping house clean. taken out of the box and vacuum sealed these soap bars have an indefinite shelf life. you could ration yourself on how many bars a week and carry enough with you to last for years (or until you figure an alternative to soap out). what kind of seed would you bring? me personally, i’d bring corn, beans, potatoes, grape vines, and a few other things. the food..corn,beans,potatoes are excellent ways of keeping enough food on hand until the next harvest. watermelons as well because of all the seed they can produce. firestarters? go to cabelas.com and check those out. what to do with your human waste? your garden needs fertilizer. all food scraps and any waste would go into one pile and covered in the sun to break it down into fresh “black gold”. food for the plants. fishing supplies? nets.slatwater line,hooks,traps,etc..etc. tools for building, farming, and food prep. cooking supplies. i would take a dutch oven and a stainless steel grill plate for a campfire grill. a non electric distiller. you can actually put sea water in these and it converts it to fresh water. leaves the salt behind..seasoning,anyone? you would need peppers and herbs for seasoning. ahhh. i could go on and on…but think about it..have you even gotten this far?

This would be really awesome and in my opinion entirely possible, even only for temporary time.

I’m sure everyone here was at one point serious about this, but what i want to know is; How are you planning on finding enough drinking water on a deserted island? Also unless you find a big enough island which isnt inhabited, i’m guessing you will have a problem with farming.

I would suggest trying to find uninhabited land, it would be much easier. I read that there are up to 100 tribes in the Amazon that have not been reached by civilization yet, and it looks like it is going to stay that way for a long time.

Anyway. I suggest we all decide on a better place to discuss this.

I would love to do this!  — 2 months ago

I would love to just live on an island (with at least 5 people to keep company) and have no worries except for finding food, drink and shelter!

Me and my mate are thinkin about getting rid of our jobs and just heading off, easier said than done though, maybe if we had more people to plan things with we would!

The dream continues!

I want to live on deserted island for a year or two very much  — 3 months ago

This is something I want to experience in life. I yearn for it, moved to do it, and believe it’s something that is meant for me. I want to be prepared but not to much if you know what I mean.

So, is anyone looking further into doing this?  — 4 months ago

I got into the idea from the Euel Gibbons Beachcombers Handbook and have always wanted to do it. I have endless skills and ideas so would be a good addition to any group.

I will do this  — 5 months ago

Even as a kid, I always had a Robinson Crusoe complex, but as an adult, I see it as an opportunity to live honestly and without distraction, and a way of cleansing my soul. I’m not saying I’d want to spend the rest of my life doing this, but I’d want to do it for at least a year.
