Got my stuff today...  — 1 year ago

Since I’m too scared to go to a tafe or uni, I signed up for a correspondance course in Social Psychology. It’s a short course (100 hours) and since the LAST correspondance course I did I never finished, I’m really determined this time to FINISH the thing!

    Worth doing!

I’ve ever posted so much for a goal that I’ve marked as complete!

Possibly with the exception of my running goal, which I need to update.

This afternoon… in about an hour… I’m going to one of the coffee companies for a couple of hours, to do the basic Barista course. I’m enjoying this so much, that I’d almost consider giving up my full-time job.

Except for the fact that I wouldn’t be able to live in the manner to which I’ve become rather accustomed, o’course… perhaps that’s a sign that I need to pare back my living expenses somewhat.

I am officially a bar wench!

Okay, so I still don’t have the cleavage, but who cares?!

I completed my couple of hours at the bar, and at the end of the shift, the owner offered me some work. Must have like my style... or summat. (My wrist action’s pretty good Malc! ;-P)

He wanted me to work at a function this Wednesday, but what with having a full-time job, that was going to be kind of difficult. So, instead, I’m working this coming Sunday.

Oh, and Denise… don’t tell anyone, but he’s paying me cash.

I’m doing a couple of hours of work experience tonight!

Eek! I’m a little nervous, actually. Mind you, I’ll probably mostly be doing some stocking/cleaning-type stuff. But it should be good!

    Wish me luck!

    Worth doing!

I haven’t completely stuffed-up the take-home tests, this is pretty much done.

I have to phone a guy on Monday night about organising a couple of hours work experience, and the following week we go to one of the coffee companies for a two-hour training session. I made a few decent cafe lattes today though.

Friends of mine are opening a cafe/restaurant soon, so I may be able to sneak in some practise there… otherwise I need to decide whether I want to take on a little extra work… tax issues are the big thing to consider. That, and the fact that I seem to have something in my diary for just about every weekend over the next few months. I guess I could do a couple of shifts during the week…

Day 1. Er... slight hiccup to start the day.  — 1 year ago

I turned up at the venue this morning, and was right on time. Unfortunately… I wasn’t in the right place.

Who knew that there were two Belgian Beer Cafes in Melbourne?! Not me, that’s for sure… until I asked where I could find the Eureka bar, and was informed of its location.

Sometimes I’m a complete and utter nuff-nuff, I swear. I did read the information letter that was sent out to me… it’s just that my brain didn’t register the location, because it didn’t make sense. I assumed it was the Belgian I knew… but you know what they say about assumptions!

So, 45 minutes late, I arrived at the course. It wasn’t a big deal… I really hadn’t missed much, except for a tour around the place. The course itself was quite enlightening. I’ve now realised that all those times I’ve driven home from friends’ houses after a couple of glasses of wine, I was more than likely over the limit. Something to keep in mind.

We had a little practise behind the bar… and let me just tell you… I can pull a beer like an absolute champion! First try, an’ all. The best bit was that we got to consume the beer as well. Bonus.

The course continues next Saturday. Apparently we have the opportunity to do a couple of hours of work experience, and we also get to partake of a basic Barista course, which will be held the following weekend.

I’ve been thinking that it’d be a good idea to do a short course on basic bartending skills… mostly to give me a little know-how should I want to do some pub work whilst I’m travelling, but also in case I decide I want to get a little extra work before I head off.

I know I could probably get the work anyway… as a friend from the UK pointed out this evening, there’s an Aussie behind the bar of every pub in England… I’d like to feel that I have a little bit of an idea what I’m supposed to be doing.

Yesterday I phoned and enrolled myself in a course that starts this weekend. It runs over two Saturdays… and the bonus is that it’s held in the bar of a venue I really like.

    Beer, anyone?
