How to plan a vacation by DeadWriter

"Searching out the best prices was vexing, but in the end it was a satisfying experience."

How I did it:

  1. I picked several locations for my trip and priced them out.
  2. I then figured out my budget. 
  3. I looked for the best prices and came up with several different plans. 
  4. I piece mailed several different transportation and lodgings together from a few online venders.
  5. I collected a set of optional things that I can, but don't have to do while on vacation. 
  6. I confirmed all bookings. 
  7. I created a wiki for my trip containing all information about my trip and mailed it to my love, my admin. asst., and myself. 

Lessons & tips: Sometimes booking transportation and lodging separate is less expensive than doing it together.  Sometimes the hotel is the best place to book a room.
Rental cars cost different from different locations.  Price out your pickup location from several spots, like the airport, a different airport, the hotel, and away from the hotel.  I kid you not, the difference can be $40/day.

    Chatted with my sister this evening. She & her husband got their plane tickets & placed a reservation for lodging (but we may change that, in order to stay in the same hotel); they don’t have a rental car reserved this time, so maybe we’ll play chauffeur. In any case, it’ll be nice to see them. smile

    Investigated lodging options in the area where my grandmother lives (they are very limited & therefore quite expensive). We may have to stay a bit further away, driving over daily, in order to get good value for the money. (It also depends whether we’ll be able to share lodging – in a suite-type hotel – with my sister & her husband.)

    A very frustrating web-site & an even more frustrating wait on the toll-free number, but in the end, very good service (delivered with a charming Anglo-Indian accent) & a good price on our holiday “travel package.”

    My sis wrote back, giving me an idea of their possible travel dates, which is helpful & frustrating all at the same time: helpful to have them (at least tentatively) so early, frustrating that they’re so different from the travel dates we’ll likely have. wry grin

    I’ve made the first phone call & written the first e-mails to begin planning a visit during December to the relatives Out West. I’m trying to coordinate things so that we can have an “extra” visit with my sister & her husband (either before or after seeing the rest of the family). smile
