Rebel Without A Crew 3 years ago

I am reading Robert Rodriguez’s, “Rebel Without A Crew,” and it’s a page turner. I’m inspired by his motivation, passion and committment. I realize that I can make a film with what I have. I really only need one piece of gear, a converter to import my Hi8 footage into my Mac. I don’t need to buy an expensive camera. Besides, Final Cut has effects that will make the video look like film.

He learned on crappy equipment and he had to edit on VCR’s. I have all of this nice stuff so it might be easier? I don’t know about that. I won’t know until I get in there.

I already know I want to make a documentary. I thought about making one about East Atlanta. Then at the coffee shop I saw that one had been made – and pretty much on the same topic I was thinking.

So now I’m going to make one about where I work. There are so many interesting characters with great stories and personalities. I figure if I come up with some good questions, I can ask them to tell stories and then just edit them all together.

Production costs? Basically just getting the converter so I can import the footage.

Camera 3 years ago

ver since I got this Mac I’ve wanted a camcorder so I can use iMovie. Then I got Final Cut. Now I really want to use it.

For now I’m importing old footage which I’m going to edit into something, what I don’t know.

I’ve been looking at cameras for a while now. There is so much out there. It’s overwhelming. The clear leaders are Sony and Canon but prices range from $1300 to $3200 for cameras that are pro-amateur.

I know I don’t need a professional camera now. I’ve got to start somwhere though.

I’m considering taking some directing and editing classes too. Is this all a fad or a new passion? I don’t know yet. I do know that I’m getting ideas for some music videos for my own songs.

One of my best skills is follow-thru so I’m sure we’ll all find out soon enough.

Another idea 3 years ago

Today I hung out with my buddy Andrejs at his pool. I forgot how it came up but I mentioned I had some video from college, various parties, a trip to Mardi Gras, etc. I told him I wanted to edit the footage into something a while ago but got off it. He said he wants to see it so now I think I’ll go ahead with it. Besides I got this iMac with iMovie, might as well use it for something right?

It's still here 3 years ago

Last night I got inspired about this again. I wrote an intro and a rough outline. I know some people I can interview. I’m definitely going to focus on the business and art side of East ATL. I even had an idea for a theme.

I think it could be pretty cool. Now if I can make the time and follow through.

Where I live 3 years ago

One idea I had was to walk around and simply interview people in my neighborhood. I live in an awesome part of town, East Atlanta. I’m not sure how people would react to some bloke with a handheld asking them questions.

We have a lot of cool stores, restaurants and bars here. There are even 3 tattoo shops.

What do you think?

Did it, would do it again in a heartbeat 4 years ago

I’ve produced two films – a short film called Paranoia3, which won an award at Dragon*Con; and a mockumentary called “The Making of Tequila Killer”. Both were monumental life achievements, and not as difficult as people think.

I’m always willing to give advice, read scripts, help with production issues. If you live locally to me (Maryland), I may even be willing to help out on set!
