and totally not scary at all! All the people (trainers, staff, members) seemed really friendly and there was a great atmosphere – and a great range of people, all shapes and sizes and ages.
So I was sold on it pretty quickly! For a little over twice what I was paying a month to go to grimy heaving public pools I now have:
- a club 12 mins from my house!
- gorgeous new pool, usually empty
- huge new gym – I saw it at about 5.40 on a Wednesday and it was 2/3 empty, with a special women-only section
- a great long list of free classes (yoga! Aqua! dance! and a whole mass of others!)
- free access to all the other clubs (so I can go swimming with T whenever I like!)
- free access to central London clubs 4x a month each (so I can go 2 or 3 mornings a week to the 2 or 3 clubs near work)
- towel hire!!!
- my own locker!! no more humping kit and bottles around!
The thing I couldn’t get over was how CLEAN it was. The gym, the changing rooms, the pool – everything was spotless. And so much space. I can seriously see myself spending a LOT of time there! Have an induction to the machines on Tuesday and will be going for my first swim in that gorgeous pool this morning!
So excited!

Next step: give them a call to confirm the details, go and check out the gym and get the membership

Completed this goal this morning. I didn’t get to use the membership today though because the yoga class I planned to attend was cancelled due to the instructor’s illness :( Just my luck. Otherwise, I finally have a gym to call my home.

I’ve been debating whether to join a gym to get fit or not for a few months. The ones where I live are pretty expensive but I think having a gym membership would give me the motivation to go and exercise more. I’ve decided on which gym I would join, now I just need to pluck up the courage to join!

I’ll be honest: Going on vacation to America while you’re on a budget, won’t do any good to your waistline. Especially if you’re mainly having pizza’s and hamburgers like I did.
One time I ordered a steak with some mashed potatoes, not knowing that in America, mashed potatoes are served in mountain sized portions on your plate. You could basically plan a ski resort on those things, including locations for several chairlifts and the luxurious hotel with heated swimming pool. In the end I could only manage to eat half the glacier. So no more black piste for the mashed potato ski resort…
Anyway, at home I’m having a pretty balanced diet. The problem is that I’m just not exercising enough, which is what happens to most people who’s work is to stare at computer screens all day (like me). So what I need to do is get away from my desk, and start moving!
Since I absolutely loathe team sports, I probably need to join a gym to keep in shape. But there a few things holding me back. The main reason is that the nearest gyms around here aren’t exactly gyms in the traditional sense of ‘get in, go on a treadmill, lift weights, get out’. Over here they’re called ‘Health Centres’: A place where you can go on a treadmill if you choose to, but where they also offer things like a sauna, a relaxing swimming pool and a macrobiotic drinks bar. Which sounds nice, but comes with a hefty monthly fee to pay for all the aromatic colour therapies they’re offering as some kind of bonus. Poor students like me are just not their target audience.
Another thing that’s holding me back is that I don’t know anyone else who goes to a gym (or a health centre if you will). And I don’t know about you, but I certainly don’t like to do things like these on my own…
Anyway, it’s probably going to take a while before I finish this particular goal. I may need some more income before I even begin to think about signing up for a gym membership.
Oh well, maybe I just need to take the bike more for now to get around instead of taking the bus…

In order to complete another goal on my list (Lose 25 pounds) I need to join a gym to take a more active approach to losing that weight. A gym will provide some type of accountability.
.... I hope.

I’ve been looking in to cardinal fitness. it’s across town (near a genoa pizza place.. which might eventually defeat the purpose..) BUT! i’m hoping to start it up, and go with my mom. she would like to see how work and school goes for her first, but i’m ready to just wing it! i wanna do this! i’ll give ‘er a week! (half because i don’t want another expense, and half because i need to MOVE! dammit!)
