I’ve been dreaming about going on a dig since I was a little girl—and now that dream has finally come true. The dig was located in the mountain of North Carolina, and there I participated in a field school for about a week. They taught us the basics and then we dug and screened all day long. It was truly an amazing experience and I hope to go on many more digs in my lifetime.
To all the childhood Indiana Jones fans out there, just go do it! You won’t regret it!

Vikings in northern Britain-that’s where I’d like to look-some of my father’s ancestors.

Digging in Israel 14 months ago

I participated in an archaeological dig in Israel. I was only there for one week (of a 4-week dig), but it was awesome and I learned so much. Our group excavated a supposed Byzantine-era monastery—just one part of a giant complex of ancient structures on a tel halfway between Jerusalem and Bethlehem. After one week of digging in the dirt for pottery shards and old bones, I spent the rest of my vacation traveling around the country. This experience truly enriched my perspective of history and also the politics of Israel (past and present). Worth doing!!

Bronze Age Dig 18 months ago

I have been to the same Bronze age dig for the past two years. I would say to anyone grab you tools and find a dig, then dig till you find something. You don’t know what it is like to find someting from around 210bc until you have it in your hands. Think on this I have held bone tool that have not been held in about 2790 year. What a rush you get to know you are the first person since the person in the bronze age drop or lost it.

Not to some desert or far away land but here in the States… lots of meticulous digging and moving of earth looking for broken glassware and odds and ends at the site of a 16 century home.

I dig it! 23 months ago

Its too late for me to study archaeology and probably there aren’t that many employment opportunities…
HOWEVER I really want to take part in an archaeology dig, preferably as part of a holiday. Its a lifelong dream!

Being a second year archaeology it’s still a bit sad that i’ve not been on any real digs. Hopefully though i’ve been in contact with County Sites and Monuments Records Officer and Canterbury City Council archaeologist director and i may get some placements volunteering.

May have a possible dig for a Medieval Manor House in Maidstone soon next year, finger crossed.

Volunteering with the National Trust 2 years ago

The National Trust has a few very oversubscribed digs where they let volunteers help out—I think I’d like to go on one of those.

went to a few archaelogy digs as a teen when I did volunteer work at my local museum.. the only things we managed to dig up were roman ruins on a dig near Liverpool Street/Algate in London.. took me ages before they would actually let me go into the dig and use a brush.. but as we all had to do the grout work we all got a go at actually brushing and skimming the dig..
