I found a used spinning wheel in a consignment shop today and couldn’t resist. It needs a tune-up, but I’m hoping a local shop will be able to help. I definitely need to take some spinning classes because I don’t think I can teach myself, but I’m excited about the challenge!

I mean, what the heck. I have about 561 hobbies, why not add another?
I made my own drop spindle and bought a lighter one as well. I’ve got some merino roving and a batt of alpaca. I find the merino a lot easier to spin; the alpaca is really slick and not quite as “grabby” (though it makes a gorgeous thin yarn)
I’m getting a little better; I have a miniature skein under my belt (yardage unknown) that I just dyed today with kool-aid (super oh-my-gosh-I’m-going-blind bright orange for the win) in a striped pattern.
SO much fun so far!

Well, I’m not an expert by a long shot, but my wheel and I are friends. Spinning is so insanely relaxing! And, of course, I have a crazy fiber stash already…

I got my first roving today!
It’s very pretty.. I spun up a tiny bit of it, but I’m waiting for more time.
Still, it’s exciting.

I randomly started to learn to spin. I got a short wooden dowel and a toy wheel at the craft store and made a spindle, then picked apart some old yarn into fiber (which a really nice guy on Craftster gave me some tips on), and started spinning.
My first yarn isn’t too great, but I didn’t expect it to be.
I have some real wool coming from Ebay in a few days! I’m excited.

My first yarn is spun and plied. It’s pretty thick and thin, although the plying evened it out quite a bit. I discovered that I’d been using my wheel wrong – it’s set up to work as double drive or scotch tension, and I had been using it as some sort of freakish hybrid. All better now, and it does make the spinning easier.

I bought a spinning wheel, a drop spindle, lots of wool roving, and a few books last night. Got home too late to try it out, though, so I’ll put it all together and have a go at it over the weekend.

I took a spinning class the other night and have m girst dozen or so yards of yarn spun. Mostly on a drop spindle, but we learned to use a wheel and card as well. So far my yarn is far to tight and springy (like a telephone cord), but I’ll get there!
