    unless 3 years ago

i can get on Extreme Home Makeover….
did you know it’s a 17 page application? i’m sure if I took the time to fill it out & send in pics & a video, we’d get approved…that’s probably the only way we’d be able to truly fix up this house without completely putting ourselves in debt for the next 10 generations LOL

    getting closer 3 years ago

to having dad’s kitchen done!! YAY!
the table saw is set up now. that means we start the floor installation very soon!!! yeehaa!!!!
once that’s done, we can move his table to his kitchen (and off our porch) so i can then clean off the porch & move the glider out of the kitchen & onto the porch!!!

the more i consider the repairs 3 years ago

and the cost, the less i want this house… there are too many hazardous materials that have just been sitting for decades. the cost of having those removed, alone, is well above the projected budget. sorry, i’m not a multi-millionaire
the other thing i have been taking into consideration is that pirate living downstairs (AKA Dad). he doesn’t realize that our lives are on hold to such a degree that we can’t even think about discussing when we’d like to adopt a child. no reputable agency would allow a child to live in this house (no person in their right minds would want to either…we had no other option at the time)
i love this neighborhood, i grew up here. i just don’t foresee us having the money necessary to even bring this house up to code! it’d be alot cheaper (i’m sure) to tear it down & build a new one in the same footprint (and try to keep within the architecture of the neighboring house which have been kept up over the years)

a new roof (with a pitch) 3 years ago

is necessary to prevent further water damage to the ceiling and walls. it would also provide peace of mind (i won’t be afraid of this window falling out)

my sister and i 3 years ago

cleaned out dad’s back porch (downstairs) last weekend… i can’t believe how much wood was out there! holy moly!
we’re that much closer to putting the new kitchen floor in for him…
i put up new curtains upstairs (my apt) with these beautiful silver scroll rods & silver holdbacks (i think they’re actually stainless steel but they look silver dammit!) washed the blinds, windowsills, and windows. what a difference!!! it looks much nicer now…

after the deck 3 years ago

    the roof, then the bathroom!!!
we need the deck rebuilt to get the roof fixed/replaced. then we can have the bathroom brought into this century (it’s currently circa 1940-something….10 gallon toilet and claw-foot tub) then we can move on to other things, like the heating and electric through out the house. oh yeah! and replacing all the windows & insulating the whole house…i wonder if it’d be cheaper to tear it down & rebuild… yikes! what am i getting into here?????

    the deck 3 years ago

is falling apart. it’s not safe to use at all (even as an emergency exit! YIKES!!) the railings come up to just above my knees, the wood was warped before it was put up, it’s just very poor construction with weak materials.
we’d like to have a nice deck where we can sit on a summer night & have a nice view of the yard…
it’s still Dad’s house, but he gave permission for us to have the deck replaced phew
