How I did it: Went back to Cafe Beignet - a staple of my early days in New Orleans and ordered a few beignets with hot chocolate (not coffee- hot cocoa is the more traditional and suited accompaniment in my opinion as a true blue cajun) ;)

I had my beignets and cafe au lait at the Cafe Du Monde in the Crescent City, but jesus, I think the last time was in 1976. Now, after Katrina, I wouldn’t want to go back there, it would be too sad. In a long life I’ve learnt one thing: you can never go back. You can’t step in the same river twice. Things change, and it’s almost never the way you might want them to change. Keep your memories bright, and go on to do new things. I treasure that long-ago memory of beignets and french coffee, I don’t need to go back there, and I’m looking for new frontiers. 6 years ago

Was in NOLA from Sunday-Wednesday, and went to Cafe du Monde for my beignet fix—it’s absolutely worth it! Just don’t forget the cafe au lait to cut the sweetness of the powdered sugar liberally dredged over the beignets. :D 6 years ago

One of the best sweets I’ve had in a long time. I spent some time at Cafe Du Monde on Monday and shared beignets with my mom. It was very relaxing especially since there was a neat jazz band playing, and so yummy! It’s definitely an experience I wish to repeat! 6 years ago

I’m thinking that in the wake of Katrina, there are better places to have beignets than New Orleans. 6 years ago

in New Orleans! Haven’t been back since hurricane Katrina.
Now I can have cafe au lait and beignets everyday if I want them at the new orleans cafe a few blocks from my house. 6 years ago

There used to be a wonderful Vietnamese place in a place I used to live and they served beignets and I liked their beignets very much. Unfortunately, they closed. I added this goal because I want to have some beignets again, and it seems like New Orleans is considered “the place” to have beignets…. 7 years ago

Family members of mine took me to do this when I was very young. I didn’t appreciate it. Went back to do it as an adult. I can now genuinely say that the only reason to do this is for bragging rights as a tourist. More than a few ordinary donut shops produce more tasty pastries.
Myself, I opt for Godiva chocolate, or better. And, for bragging rights in food, I opt for pasta in Roma. (Have done that, and THAT was worth it!) 7 years ago

haha ok I did this when I was around 8 years old. But they are delicious so everyone should do it! Then we went to see the 49ers play the saints at the Superdome. That was also cool :) 7 years ago

A second cousin (maybe a third cousin?) graduated from Loyola law school back when I was in high school – must have been the mid 90s when we were there?
Our whole family shared chicory coffee and warm, sugary beignets at the Cafe du Monde one morning, and then we had to get more beignets and some chicory coffee to take home before we left.
It was our trip to New Orleans that helped my sister to fall in love with Masks, and she still collects them to this day. (She was also in love with Bourbon street, and she was only in middle school at the time!)
A wonderful trip, although I feel sad to think that if I ever get a chance to go back, not only will it never be the same, but everything I see will remind me of the tragedy of Katrina. 7 years ago

Of course, you have to drink that coffee that comes with them!!!!! It was a long drive to New Orleans from California in an unairconditioned van, but it was fun. Claudia and I still talk about it. Jason got sick and we had to find a hospital for him. On the way out of town, we headed in the wrong direction. We had to go back over this truely humongous bridge and back through downtown New Orleans. I said, “Heck, I want some of the beignets!!!” So, we found a parking space and sat down and ate them. They were darn good! Maybe the best thing we ate on the trip (other than that hot sauce in Holbrook, New Mexico!). 7 years ago
