Get into the woods! 3 years ago

I have to admit: I cheated a little on this thing because it was getting dark near the end of my circumnavigation, and I’ve already walked around most of the seawall and usually visit Stanley Park by wandering on the east side. So, my circular route around Stanley Park was actually a little bit triangular, because I was avoiding areas I’m already familiar with. Instead of doing the seawall, I decided to go around the park by taking some trails and steering clear of the roads and as much seawall as possible. After parking near the Aquarium (and picking up a map of Stanley park, which you can also find at http://www.city.vancouver.bc.ca/parks/parks/stanley/overviewMap.htm- good for locating those trails!) we walked along the Seawall from Lumberman’s Arch, up to Avison trail, and then straight up to Prospect Point (a great climb!) After that it was a leisurely stroll through the woods along Merilees trail until Third Beach (this trail has some huuuge cedars!), where we switched to Tatlow Walk and kept on it instead of going along Rawlings Trail because it was getting late. After Tatlow Walk (which also has some enormous cedars, especially near the end) ended at the Lion’s Gate bridge road through the park, we walked along the not-very-pedestrian-friendly road that leads back to the Aquarium (Park Drive, I think.) A good tip: reserve at least two hours to walk along the whole park – you will be tempted to dawdle and look at big trees and chat with other walkers and so on. And if you’re going to take the seawall, do it on a bike or rollerblades or split it up into visits to the park along several weekends, because the seawall can get a little bit monotonous. Total trip: about 5-6 km, compared to probably 10 km around the whole park, counting the other side of Lost Lagoon. Next time I will reserve some more time and do the whole thing in one go!

I *heart* Vancouver... 3 years ago

Do it in Summer then do it in Winter, and you will see how much the city changes with the seasons. The move from beach resort to sleepy industrial port is remarkable.

She didn’t expect us to walk all the way around Stanley Park, so she wasn’t too pleased with me. Anyway, I love walking, so it wasn’t too difficult a feat to do. I wish I could do it again and document it with photographs, if I was still living in Vancouver. If I was, I’d do it in a heart-beat!
