I’m from Switzerland and live there as well. Therefore English is not my native language.
I think taking that into account my English is already quite good, and it’s something I’m proud of because I’ve learned it all by myself (watching movies, clips, listening to songs and reading books…), BUT: I have an american accent since the shows I’ve first watched were american… I like my american accent, but I want to be able to speak with a british accent as well, it can be very pretty and elegant (or extremely annoying, but so can american…)
And since there are some british people I admire a lot (like oscar wilde, pete doherty and carl barat, for example) I want to get this accent. I’ll just listen to british people a lot =)
How to have a british accent
How I did it: Listening and training your mouth and ear to coordinate are the most essential thing. The first new accent is always the hardest. Now I coach a variety of accents and formed http://www.accenthelp.com/ with a couple of other professional coaches. You can hear native speakers and there are recordings and booklets that teach a wide variety of accents and dialects. The intro on the site should help you to understand the concept of learning accents/dialects better: http://www.accenthelp.com/intro.html . Another great resource to check out is the International Dialects of English Archive for more recordings of native speakers: http://web.ku.edu/idea/.
Realize that there are a LOT of different British accents! (What most people mean when they say "British Accent" is what is commonly called Standard British or RP (Received Pronunciation).
Lessons & tips: In addition to teaching tools (http://www.accenthelp.com/ & similar recordings that teach an accent) and listening to native speakers, the most essential tool is a recorder so that you can record yourself "imitating" the speaker's accent. The only thing that would be even better is working with an actual coach--Check out the Voice and Speech Trainers Association to find a coach in your area: http://www.vasta.org/

Okay, heres my story:
I was born in England and grew up in England and had my British Accent. When I was ten, I moved to New Zealand and had this horrible Kiwi Accent. I then went to Australia (gosh I keep moving to places!) when I was twelve and I still got my horrible Kiwi Accent. I’m trying very hard to get my lovely British Accent back cos with the kiwi accent, i sound like a boy! I used to sound so cute with the british accent and im trying hard to get it back
Like Kate Nash.
So bad.
So so bad.
I think i am going to play tapes of people talking in british accents while i am sleeping.
I’m from morocco and I really wanna speak with a british accent. I don’t really have an arabicant accent. I’ve tried recording myself but I sound fake. So I just don’t really know that it’s an effect of hearing my own voice recorded or if I truly suck.
Audrette hmm
I’m Italian and I hate how Italian accent sounds while speaking in English. I also have been studying English for many years, so I think my accent would ruin everything pretending I don’t speak fluently. I love British accents and I also like Irish ones. My teacher says my accent is good but I need a little more improvement.
I feel I should point out, as a Brit, that there is no “British accent”. I recommend the Wikipedia page on British English: it gives you an overview of the huge variety of accents and dialects that exist even within small regions, let alone across the rest of the UK!

It’s all very well picking and choosing bits of accent and slang that you like best, but the hodgepodge end result can sound extremely bizarre to us natives.
Additionally, as someone with Cockney roots, be very aware that trying to seriously speak like Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins can only end in disaster. We can just about forgive him for failing miserably, but we may not be so kind to you.
Do proper research, be consistent with whichever region’s speech you choose to emulate, and have fun!
i guess someone believing that i was actually british counts for completing “having a british accent”!!! wow, was it fun… i love british stuff: movies, music, anything. so i’m around the accent a lot. i’ve practiced it many a time home alone or in the shower [HAHAHAHAHA] and i guess my craziness paid off.
my name was bridget, from london. i kept it going for the whole night until i just got to tired of thinking of things to say. :D
DO IT!
I was born in England, but I have lived in the US my entire life, but I want to get the accent back!
