ooamaimomoooReally now.

I’m 26 years old and I’ve been drawing for most of my life. I took a few years off which really set me back in my growth as an artist.. but I’m definitely back into the groove of drawing again and well, I’m deciding that I’m not going to get a job in the art world without a portfolio. DUH.

And currently, I don’t feel like I have ANY pieces that I’d be proud enough of to even have in a portfolio. (Well, that aren’t fan arts anyway..)

I feel kind of lame, because I have a lot of works I’ve completed recently, but nothing that really screams “PORTFOLIO WORTHY!”

What I need to do, is sit down and create works for the soul purpose that they’re going to be a part of my professional portfolio. Because right now I’m doing a lot of drawing, but it’s all for fun. Which is great practice, but the problem is that I tend to get really lazy about half-way through.

I’m going to start a piece right now and I have to remember to take as many breaks from it that I need to take.

Basically, I need to stop rushing through my work. I’m not in any art classes or programs. I don’t have an art-related job so I’ve got no deadline. SO I’m asking myself… WHAT’S THE FUCKING RUSH? D:

I guess I get a little irritated when I can’t get a piece to look right, and instead of scrapping it or attempting to fix it, I just go, “Fuck it”—and I just want to finish it so bad that I rush it and then GASP! I’m just not happy with the end result.

Which I’m realizing is a bad habit and really, just stupidity on my part. Good things take time. I want to create something I’m proud of. And I want to put that something into my portfolio. :D 17 months ago

Ryan AlbrightI need to get one together...

I need to get one together so that I can showcase it to some tattoo shops and hopefully find an apprenticeship. I have about 20 pieces I think I could put into one but have no idea how to organize them and put it together… 20 months ago

I’m working on putting together a portfolio to show my abilities to be the director of photography, producer, and casting director of music videos. I have one especially good music video complete. I would like to have a minimum of five videos of varied genres. I’d also like to decorate my portfolio with photography and graphic design. 2 years ago

Marie GoodartDon't need a reason for a portfolio

Why do I need a reason to create a portfolio? I can make a list of all the things I might possibly use my portfolio for, and make links to each of these ‘audiences’ I can create many pages that are just for my personal website, and put them into a different category of the website, not under portfolio, or chose not to publish them at all! 3 years ago

This “portfolio” idea has changed over the past few years. I have help students create writing portfolios, art portfolios and I have created a professional teaching portfolio for possible employers… I was hoping to create my own art portfolio, but I have not actually produced any of my own art in quite a while.

So, I have contented myself in this goal to at least be helping other students with their portfolios. It just keeps giving… :) 3 years ago

I want to put together a graphics and photography portfolio with all my work. I want a physical portfolio, plus a web site. I want it all to have a consistent theme with resume, business card, email stationary, etc. 4 years ago

ChelseyThis will be for my writing

I have a lot of pieces to sift through, so I’ve decided to pick one piece every day until I have a good sized portfolio of my best pieces. 4 years ago

Marie Goodartinspired by grandpa's journal

So, this goal has been pushed to be finished because I decided to finish my design class with a portfolio of all my class work at the end of fall quarter. Now I just need to continue adding to it and improving its quality. Hopefull write more…perhaps journal entries will help, but I’m not sure how to start. Electronically? Daily? etc. Perhaps my grandpa can give some input, he keeps a 10-year/5-year journal and writes entries everyday. 5 years ago

Making my portfolio has been delayed by the fact that I’ve decided to wait a year before applying to grad school. Either delaying graduation and being a part-time student next fall, or finding a job that offers experience in the field and portfolio opportunites. Perhaps both at the same time, but I perfer to be a full-time student, or a full-time employee. It’s just easier that way. 5 years ago

Marie GoodartArchitecture student's grad school portfolio.

Worked on my overall portfolio design today AND my resume. It’s turning out really well! I also have plans to make a website with my own domain name, but that’s a reward for finishing my portfolio to begin with. ;)

The requirements for the college I’m applying for is 12 pages, no larger than 8.5×11” and no more than a 1/2” optional binding.

In other words, nothing fancy! I’m thinking of focusing on my technical design skills and showing them visually, and then adding my sustatinable design work and architectural building plans from my internships to balance it out. Yin and yang! 5 years ago

Marie GoodartRead the book

I found a great book on how to design an architect’s portfolio and now all I have to do is take the time to gather all the materials. All of my work is of course in Washington, so this goal will have to wait a little while.

Sean JohnsonIt's greatest use is for yourself

The process of creating a portfolio helped me to crystalize what I’ve done with my life, as well as put me in a frame of mind that is extremely productive. It’s something of a ‘benchmarking’ tool – I can see what I’ve done already, so new activities and projects are attacked with an attitude of ‘how can I do this in a way that’s better than anything I’ve done before?’ 6 years ago
