French, or hebrew? 21 months ago

When I was a little girl, I attended jewish day school and became fluent in Hebrew. When I transferred to public school, I began speaking french instead. I was barely proficient after 6 years of middle and high school french. Now, in my mind, the two languages have become a strange hybrid when I try to use either (with hebrew winning in terms of speaking, french in terms of understanding others speak). I want to seriously speak one or the other—how do I pick?

This is definitely worth doing... 23 months ago

However it seems like the journey is never done, which could be a good thing. :) I mean, there are always words, contexts, idioms, phrases to be learned. A language never stops growing!

I only speak English and it's embarrassing... 2 years ago

I learnt very poor Spanish, German and Latin at school and was never really that interested, but the more I travel the more I want to learn. I can pick up the basics quite well but then tend to get bored/frustrated/useless! I’m now pinning my hopes on a new set of Michel Thomas CDs (www.michelthomas.com) that are supposed to be stupidly good and easy to learn from…if that fails then I think I’ll just have to move abroad so that I have no choice but to learn!

Time to learn something new! 3 years ago

I’ve been exposed to other languages my whole life—now I’d like to actually learn one.

I’m deciding between German, Japanese, Arabic, Kiswahili, French and Spanish. I’m looking for a language that will be both interesting and helpful in terms of work—and all of these have the opportunity to be that for me… I’m currently leaning toward the first 4, but need to narrow it down from there…

Learn to speak French. 3 years ago

I used to be really good at picking up languages when I was little…

I spoke kiddy Cantonese and Mandarin when I was 5 yrs old. When I was a teenager I really wanted to learn German because I have German ancestry, but it wasn’t part of the school curriculum. As I got older there were so many languages I wanted to speak including french, spanish, japanese, italian, cantonese…

and even though I got a number of teach yourself courses, I could never really get into it because I never had the opportunity to use it. And for me if you you don’t use it you lose it!!

So the key is to find people or opportunities to use what I learn. Still not quite sure how I shall do this… but the internet is a major boon to helping me sort stuff out. So maybe this is not just a pipe dream anymore.

What's That You Said? 4 years ago

I’ve taken both French and Spanish in school but was never very good at either and now remember none of it. I’d like to seriously learn one or two languages fluently so that I can go to another country and hold a conversation with the locals and find out all sorts of wonderful things.
