I avoid purchasing any meat or animal produce not certified as humanely raised and organic. In addition I am nearly 100% vegetarian. Now I need to join an advocacy group. I will do this by Thanksgiving 2009.
This year I told my mother I did not feel comfortable coming for Thanksgiving and having her serve a traditional turkey. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday but it kind of takes the joy out of the holiday to be reminded of how turkeys are traditionally farmed by the big outfits. My mother decided to get a turkey from Whole Foods as they make the effort to avoid purchase or selling of animals that were not humanely raised. (I don’t eat meat or birds either way.)
Due to the rise in organic dairy sales, the more factory farmer-like milk producers are also providing organic. To support both humane treatment of farm animals & organic, you have to be cautious with regard to which vendor you choose. Wild Oats sells some brands of organic milk that Whole Foods won’t because they do not meet Whole Foods vendor standards. Where does that leave the organic shopper who only has the option of WalMart for their shopping? The more factory oriented producers will have a lower price-point.
