randiwhitney is happy to have this list.
I joined a newly forming derby team (central mass roller derby) back in December ‘08. I LOVE IT. We won’t be having any bouts this summer but, no doubt, by next summer we will be.
At practice a few Sundays ago, we were doing our FIRST scrimmaging drill called “the impossible jam” or maybe its improbable. It’s 3 blockers on 1 team vs. a jammer and a pivot on the other team. I’m usually a shy kind of person but I said “fuck it” and volunteered to be pivot. We played quite a few jams so we got to try out different positions if we wanted to. It was SO fun. I love practice anyways but this was BY FAR my favorite drill that we had done.
So in this one jam, I was the pivot again, and I fell. It kinda hurt my ankle but I figured it would be ok if I sat out a few jams. I crawled my way over to a bench and sat it out. So by the end of the practice after icing it and elevating it, it was starting to swell. I could flex and point my foot just fine and it didn’t hurt at all, but when I bent it to the side at all, it hurt pretty bad and it made a funny noise. I could put a good amount of weight on it but I couldn’t walk on it.
Long story short, I had to go in to surgery on Friday and have screws put in my ankle cuz it was broken. I broke the bottom of the fibula and it pushed over the tibia, creating a larger space between the tibia and the bone that it rests on. The doc said that because there was now that space, that I would probably end up getting arthritis in my ankle in about a year if it wasn’t corrected.
So, I’m off skates for a while. booo.
I’m going to practice tomorrow though so I can keep in touch with my teammates, cheer them on, and be a sideline coach. I’ll probably start a notebook and write down the drills that they are doing. I’m going to be on the training committee so I can take advantage of this time to watch and learn training techniques and drills.
Also, we are trying to raise money for our LLC so now that I am gonna be bored at home, I can help on the fundraising committee instead of staring out my window and wishing I could mow the lawn that is growing out of control. hah.
There’s always a silver lining.
I’m happy that I now have a use for all those socks that don’t have a match!
