We must have seen the episode of I Love Lucy where she squished the grapes with her feet. I grew up in what was then an Italian-Irish community. The previous owner of our house had planted grape vines all around the back yard, and they would produce large number of dark purple grapes which we would throw at each other but not eat very often. They were very sour, my mouth waters and puckers as I think about it even though it’s been decades since I ate one of them. So of course, we knew they were wine grapes. So of course, we had to collect then and squish them with our toes one time. What a yucky mess, but it was fun at the time. I’d forgotten all about that.

I prefer to squish them with my hands. It just seems more therapeutic.
This was definitely worth doing, just because it’s one of those weird, random goals that’s a lot of fun. It probably wouldn’t have been as fun(ny) if my boyfriend hadn’t walked into the bathroom, saw me standing in the tub with grapes squished between my toes, then shook his head and walked out. I made an attempt to explain, but he just stared at me like I was nuts and made some comment along the lines of “I will definitely never understand women”. I swear I’ll get him to try it though.
we´ve made our own wine for the past two years and treading the grapes is my very favourite part … it´s FUN. but i made myself feel sick by drinking too much grape juice and turning round and round in the treading bucket! if you´d like to join us and help make next year´s wine, let me know.
