I played bassoon for three years and then quit…now I miss it and want to play again, but I don’t know where to go to rent one. The bassoon is truly a special, unique instrument. I’ll always love it.

Living In God's Exquisite, Miraculous Sufficiency wishes everyone a very Merry Christmas!!!
I picked up the bassoon when I was in 6th grade. Since I already played several instruments, this was quite easy for me. It was a cool instrument and I called my wooden brown bassoon a shotgun.
I also competed with my bassoon and did reasonable. Played in an orchestra. There were not many bassoonists in my day in the state. I felt special.
I have played it for 8 years and it is so much fun. If you want it is totally worth it.
Hey Peoples
The bassoon is the most amazing instrument you will ever play/set eyes upon.
To begin with, if you ever play the bassoon for even just 2 years, you can find roles in community orchestras and so on, as there are NOT MANY BASSOONISTS, PERIOD!
The exquisite tone colour and register that the Bassoon can perform is to die for, and it allows the player with only, like I said, a few years experience to really express themselves through the instrument, unlike other instruments which require more work to do this.
I am definantly not saying anyone wishing to undertake this would have an easy time – it is definantly not for the light of heart. There are new ways to breath et cetera which require a good, solid commitment to practicing.
I playted the flute for 7 years (and still do!) but after only 3 or so years of the bassoon I was able to play with feeling – which to me is the most important thing about playing a musical instrument, giving music and feeling.
If you have played any Wind or Brass instrument before, then it will be easier for you to begin playing the bassoon. Similarly, like for any musical instrument, it will be easier for you if you have done some musical theory before.
Some people take it up and then decide a couple of months later that it is not for them. I would agree, then maybe it isn’t right for you. Playing the bassoon for me is a very special thing that I can do, that not many other people can, and I believe, it requires a certain kind of character to really appriciate the instrument.
I would love more people to be playing it, however, so try it!
I can assure you, you will NOT regret it!
Good luck with the Bassoon!

(P.S. On a more humourous note, you will have to be happy with orchestra music from Italy or Germany calling the Bassoon a “Faggotti” or “Faggott (auf Deutch)”. However, it is a funny thing that you can laugh about in an orchestra practice!)
