Yeah, yeah, corny, I know, but ever since I saw Pocahontas when I was little I’ve always wanted to.
How to learn to canoe
How I did it: As a participant in Portland Parks and Recreation's GRUNT (Greenspaces Restoration and Urban Naturalist Team) I had the opportunity to canoe on the Willamette River. We were in a 20-person canoe and paddled for the better part of an hour-and-a-half and saw lots of industrial Portland as well as glimpses of the huge Forest Park. On the river we spotted great blue herons and cormorants. Really some of the best fun in a long time!
Lessons & tips: Bring a change of clothes, because you'll get wet, and even if you don't get wet it's good exercise and you'll definitely sweat.
Resources: Portland Parks and Recreation, GRUNT, and the organization that instructed us on canoeing (forgot their name, something like the Willamette River Alliance).
