I really want to do this even though I think mugs are nerdy.

Although of questionable ecological value, this is done. Basically, now I only drink coffee that I make at home and put in my travel mug, so I’m not in a position to buy coffee and therefore paper cups. The side-effects have been better than the primary intention: now I only drink coffee in the morning (so I’m not getting addicted, tweaky, or having trouble sleeping) and I’m not paying around four bucks every day for a big (Grande!) soy latte.

I think it’s also better for my soul. One of my professors was talking with me about the world becoming more mathematical—she meant that there are more things out there known by their Cartesian co-ordinates than their histories, attachments, gestures and interactions they imply, etc. Throw-away cups are her favorite example of these objects that are just objects.

I use too many one-time-use cups, especially from Starbuck’s. Add the plastic lid and the cardboard sleeve, and that’s a lot of trash. So, I’m going to carry my travel mug with me and drink my coffee that way.
