Saving our earth is something I fret about often. I know that there really is not much one person can do except do their part personally to reduce their ecological footprint and encourage others to do so as well. It seems like either people are already trying their best or they are people who don’t care and laugh off those of us who do as ‘crazy, environmentalist tree-huggers’. Just couple of weeks ago my husband and I were waiting to take the trolley to the Octoberfest when the driver of the trolley got off and noticed a cracked window. So he gets out his notebook and scribbles a couple of things down as a few of us lazily look on while waiting for the next trolley. Then he whips out two stickers, peels off the backings, puts the stickers over the window and drops the trash to the ground, but not before making some super intelligent comment about how there are Mexicans around to pick up the trash (which is a whole ‘nother issue, but disgusted me just as equally). I thought, “What a stinking, low-life jerk!” Now I know he was probably just trying to show off, and the trash was not that big, but we had just ridden the trolley which, no kidding, had some form of disgusting trash on EVERY seat, from empty drink containers to parts of old newspapers. It made me sick! Why can’t people just care a bit more by picking up after themselves a little here and there? I think it disturbs me because I realize that if they can’t even do that, then what kind of effort are they going to put into conserving energy or finding alternative fuel, or simply recycling? It distresses me more than it should, I mean I won’t be around when we have finally taken so much that there is nothing left to take, right? People will probably do themselves in sometime after I am gone so why do I care? Well, I DO!! I know that eventually the earth will win anyways. We will self destruct and the earth will be trashed, but she can recover. I see it happening in little (or big, if you suffer through them) ways every day. The earth tries to purge the damage that we have done from her system. She tries to rinse our damage away with floods, or burn our damage away with flames, or crumple our damage to dust with earthquakes. It seem like these are catastrophies to us, but then I see things that took us years to create, gone in an instant and I can’t help but realize the power that the earth has to wipe us clean in a matter of moments. I don’t mean that we are causing these things (although perhaps we are, who really knows for sure?), I just mean that after we have successfully trashed the earth enough that we can no longer survive on it any longer, that she will slowly repair herself with her mighty strength. So I guess that ultimately I am worried about US, humans, as a race; the human race. We can trash the planet, we certainly are, at an ubelievably fast rate (did you know that there is not one place on earth that some form of polution cannot be detected? Not one!) but I’ve come to the conclusion that we won’t win”; we can’t. But she certainly will.
