I’ve been sick for almost 2 weeks now, and I think it’s been good for this goal. Granted, I’m skipping the soymilk/berry/banana shake in the morning, since in my phlegmy state I just can’t get excited about it, but I’m having oatmeal instead. At least 1 cup of tea a day, too, and I still usually get a cup of soy milk in the evening and a handful of dark chocolate chips.
I’m trying to also buy almost all my produce at farmer’s market, and most of the foods I buy there are superfoods: chard, tomatoes, beans, alliums (garlic, onions, shallots, scallions, leeks, etc), berries, melons and stonefruit.
Pretty good for a sick mess, right?

I currently get between 1 and 2 servings of superfoods daily. Berries, soy, blackbeans, tomatoes, dark chocolate, salmon, spinach are ones I get pretty regularly, but I think I probably only get 2 in a day. We’re working with realistic goals here…should really be getting more like 4 or 5.
The ones I’d like to add are things like:
wheat germ
sweet potatoes
yogurt
broccoli
oats
Broccoli is usually an ick for me…we ate it 5 nights a week when I was growing up, and even though my mother cooks it perfectly, I was totally sick of it by the time I left home. I just need to be more creative…granted, making smittenkitchen’s Broccoli Slaw introduces a lot of fat, but it is soooo tasty…a meal unto itself. And happens to have cranberries and almonds, also superfoods.
Some of these go well together..most people recommend eating wheat germ on cereal or oatmeal, probably with soy milk since I have so much trouble with most dairy. Or with yogurt, which is one of the few dairy products I can eat.
And some I just need to eat more of. There’s no reason not to eat salmon at least once a week. I have wonderful recipes for red and black beans (reds are almost as good for you as blacks, and work better with some foods) that have a tomato base. And when I eat it on coconut rice, that teaspoon of turmeric…apparently, it makes a difference. I just like the color.
But the effort on foods like oranges (I have issues with the sticky fingers) and the expense of avocados (I can’t eat a whole avocado before it goes bad) makes some of them hard for me. I’ll eat them when they’re available, but might not go out of my way to buy them. And I just can’t get excited about tea…gimme the latte.
