randysable is being more responsible.
Now, I know what you’re thinking, this is totally something you can learn on your own. And this is kinda true, however as odd as it might sound, I actually took a class on this when I was in the grade school days (the park district said I was too young for the scuba class).
So if you want to do it on your own, there’s a few things to know: how to clear water out of the snorkel (blasting), how to get water from your mask without surfacing, how to presurize your ears, etc.
I looked a little and stumbled across this: http://www.ehow.com/how_1850_snorkel.html and I imagine it covers most of the basics.
Oh and a quick word about my experience with fins: avoid fins with straps and get ones with “fitted” heals. (just try them on first to make sure they’re the right size)
The reason for this is that A.) straps break and that can not just be a pain, but could lead to trouble if you’re fairly far down and B.) they never seem to fit as well as a “closed heal” fin.
As cool as it sounds to get into scuba after snorkeling, I’m actually thinking about learning how to freedive, which is basically the more advanced version of snorkeling, in which the diver trains themselves to hold their breath well in excess of a minute and can approach depths anywhere from 30 to 90 feet.
Yeah!! Finally got the hang of the breathing! Can’t wait to go again. Aleady researching best snorkel spots in the world!
I have been snorkeling since I was about 9 years old and still love it. It allows you to see such interesting things and is just a blast to be able to do a little underwater sightseeing
Snorkeling is a long time goal of mine. I really would like to but at the moment my swimming sucks so first things first, my goal should really be to swim better first and then to learn to snorkel.
... with a minimal gear (swimming google) in Croatia. During my recent holidays.
But it turned out to be so interesting, even with a relatively dead sourrounding at the places I have dived (Brela, Dubravica, Biograd na Moru) that I am hooked up.
